Heritage Day

If you take pride in your town and have an appreciation for its past, then there is a great event coming up just a short drive from Paragon at Columbia Overlook – Howard Heritage Day. On Sunday, October 5th, from noon to 4:00 pm, take the whole family over the Robinson Nature Center as this event has fun for all ages. You can take a trip back in time with activities, games, demonstrations and crafts. You can discover the fascinating history of Simpsonville as you walk the trails to the historic mill ruins with Nature Center staff, while learning about life and industry in early Howard County. You can also see archaeological artifacts recovered during studies of the site and presented by the Upper Patuxent Archaeology Group – all part of a 45-60 minute tour. Or, try your hand at calligraphy, weaving, making potpourri sachets to take home or watching a live demonstration of lace-makings. Show-and-tell artifacts brought from the Howard County Historical Society’s collections will help you delve even deeper into our local history, as will fun photo-ops using period costumes. There will also be a local author on hand, M. Lee Preston Jr., author of Archaeology in Howard County and Beyond, giving 30-minute demonstrations of Native American tool-making. Plus, Cathy Eshmont of the Heritage Division, Howard County Recreation & Parks, will offer a presentation of colonial foods and herbs. The kids will love trying out the historical games including Colonial-era games “The Game of Graces” and “Hide-the-Ring” as well as croquet and a Native American corn-husk tossing game. Play along as you listen to historic-era music and nosh on food from local vendors on the lawn. Members of the Howard County Historical Society will be on hand with artifacts and fascinating information about the cultures living in Howard County during various time periods. So check-in, grab a raffle ticket for a gift basket and browse through the center before enjoying all the Heritage Day events. The cost is $7 per person and children under 3 are free, so get out there and celebrate our county’s rich cultural heritage! A Look at Camom’s of Columbia Annual Consignment Sale this Saturday

Kids Consignment Sale! Camom Are you in the market for kid’s clothes and toys? Do you like saving money? Do you want to help the environment? Though these things might seem unrelated, you can actually do all three at once! Next weekend, just down the road from Paragon at Columbia Overlook, be sure to catch the CAMOM Consignment Sale for Infants, Toddlers, Pre-teens and Expectant Moms. camoms3 If you’ve never been to a consignment sale, you’ll be shocked to find such incredible deals, often on clothes that are barely worn and sometimes having the original tags still on them. And, by purchasing slightly worn clothes, you don’t expand your carbon footprint – as neither will new clothes need to be wastefully made nor will old clothes end up in a landfill! Bring reusable bags for checkout and you can help even more, all while getting such great deals. camoms4 Let’s face it, kids outgrow clothes quicker than they can wear them out. Others might simply (yet inexplicably) shun certain shirts or outfits, leaving them in pristine condition for the consignment. When it comes to play clothes or seasonal items that won’t be worn very long, you have a great opportunity to save money and find good, barely-worn options. Be sure to catch CAMOM’s semi-annual children’s new/used clothing and equipment consignment sale, with over 80 vendors. The sale takes place on Saturday, September 13th at Cradlerock Elementary School from 8:00am-1:00pm and many items are reduced further to half-price from 12:00pm-1:00pm. Also, there are a limited number of early shopping passes are available for $20 each, which allows you to begin shopping at 7:30AM, a full half hour before the general public. Be sure to check out their website for all the important details. Otherwise, happy bargain hunting! camoms2 CAMOM’s semi-annual consignment sale Cradlerock Elementary School 6700 Cradlerock Way Columbia, MD 717-309-3577 ...read more
