Steps to Reduce Noise in an Apartment

You enjoy living in an apartment. You probably don’t need to worry about mowing the lawn or repairing electrical or plumbing issues. You do; however, need to worry about the noise level in your apartment because you have neighbors next to you, below you or above you. Here are some steps to reduce noise in an apartment.

  1. Add Carpeting or Rugs - If you are able to install wall to wall carpeting, this will help reduce the noise. If you are unable to install carpeting, use rugs everywhere possible. Rugs can be used under the coffee table, under the television, near the entry way, in the living room, under the dining room table, in the bathroom and bedrooms. Rugs and carpets help absorb the noise in your apartment.

  2. Add Curtains - Thick and durable material used for curtains can also help reduce the noise in your apartment. Be sure that every window in your apartment has some type of curtain. This will reduce the noise level.

  3. Add Wall Coverings - Many people put tapestries or other wall decorations on the apartment walls to help reduce the noise level. These wall coverings absorb the noise, just as carpets, curtains or rugs.

  4. Add Sound Absorbing Panels - Though expensive, these panels are designed to reduce the noise level in businesses or offices. You can purchase these panels and Home Depot, Lowes or your local hardware store. Although these panels are designed for offices, you can adapt them to fit your apartment.

  5. Add Door Draft Blockers - Every door, especially the main entrance doors, should have a door draft blocker on the base of the door. This will not only keep out hot or cold air, but it will also reduce the noise level in your apartment.

  6. Add Solid Wooden Doors - Ask permission to replace hollow doors with solid doors. These heavy doors will help reduce the sound in your apartment.
