Did you know that the Typical U.S. family spends about $1,900 a year on home utility bills. Here in the North East that figure would be much higher but we seam to focus on our heating season rather than our A/C season. Here are a couple of tips to lower your electric usage with your window A/C units. 1. Buy the right size unit for the room. Energy Star has a great site to help you with this. . 2. Clean out your unit from previous years.Remove the unit from it's mounting frame (this is easy and there are many sites that will walk you through this) and vacuum out the coils with a soft brush attachment. Check for bent fins and straighten bent fins with a coil fin comb. 3. Check the air filter,if it is damaged, replace it. If it is dirty just clean with dish liquid and water, rinse, let dry and put it back in. 4. Now here is where I see a lot of money being wasted. The foam that comes with the new A/c unit to block the top of the window keeps the cool air in and the warm air (and Bugs) out. You would not live with that gaping air lose in the winter, the same should apply in the summer. look around the sides of the A/c unit,if you see daylight holes seal them, if not your just wasting YOUR MONEY. 5.
