According to a new study published byDr. Christiane Reitz, of Columbia University in the December issue of the journal Archives of Neurology in and cited in a story byRachelRettner ofMy Health News Daily,http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/good-cholesterol-hdl-alzheimers-disease-101213-0873/ (2010), high levels of good cholesterol called HDL (High-Density Liprotein) can indicate a protection against Alzheimer's, as well as potentially prevent strokes. While the study needs more in-depth research, the results are encouraging. Testing of a neighborhood in the New York Burroughs indicates that those who had high HDL counts had far fewer instances of Alzheimer's, and strokes which can lead to the condition, than those whose HDL counts were low. HDL as it relates to heart disease appears to clean out plaque build-up in vessels, especially those directly connected to the heart. It is also transported to the liver, which breaks it down and removes it from the blood. Alzheimer's is a condition related to the buildup of protein plaque in the brain. The prevailing thought is that the HDL also removes plaque buildup. If the research, beyond this small sample, bears out, the early detection and possible alternatives to prevent and reverse this debilitating disease would be incalculable. This would mean that one would be able to determine if one is at risk for strokes and Alzheimer's through the same test that detects risk for heart attacks. And that preventative measure could be taken instead of waiting until the onset of the disease with little recourse in correction.
