Turf largely avoids these problems, and with proper care, newly laid sod is usually fully functional within 30 days of installation and its root system is comparable to that of a seeding lawn two or three years older. Sod reduces erosion by stabilizing the soil in these types of areas. Sod is a finished product that is almost immediately useable. Seed may be blown about by the wind, eaten by birds, or fail because of drought. It takes some weeks to form a visually appealing lawn, and further time before it is robust enough for use. Erosion after seeding may be a concern in some areas near water. A 50 lb bag of seed is cheaper than a pallet of sod but that is like comparing a raw material to the finished product. To achieve a sod quality lawn from seed requires at least 1.5 years of fertilization, mowing, and irrigation. Seed also includes an ingredient call "WEED SEED."
