Publix Super Market at Pompano Plaza

5.0

By hckit at Citysearch

i grew up in Ft. Laud, have lived away from this area for 18 years, and moved back to the Pompano area 3 years ago. For 3 years i've been going to this Publix and the customer service is the BEST of not only any grocery store i've been to, but any store PERIOD! It's almost like a commercial on TV where everyone is so happy that it's not possibly real. They all seem to love their job. They are always helpful and happy. If they are having a bad day, I'd never know it because they are so focused on the customer's experience. To be honest, Publix can be a little pricy if you buy everything at non-sale prices, but if you buy the sale items it's great. And i love their meat and produce, and the fact that Publix pharmacies give FREE antibiotics...OF COURSE i'll buy something at your store while I'm waiting for my FREE prescription! (NOt that a purchase is required as you can just walk in and get them for free without a purchase). Thanks Publix for making shopping in at least one store in this country a pleasant experience :-) ...read more

What is a Biscotti Cookie? What is the origin of Biscotti Cookies?

In Italian, the word "biscotto" or “cantucci” means "biscuit" or "cookie."Biscotti is derived from the word "bis" which isLatin for twiceand “coctum” or baked (which became “cotto,” or cooked)  Italians call biscotticantuccireferring to any type of crunchy cookie. The British use the wordbiscuit whileAmericans use biscotti as the ancient Romans. While the Italians also have Biscotti or (Cantucci), the British haverusks;the French call thembiscotteandcroquets de carcassonne;the Germans sayzwieback;the Greeks boast ofbiskotaandpaxemadia;the Jews call itmandelbrot;and the Russians refer to it assukhariki. No matter how you refer to the crunchy and sometimes tender treat it is still delightful. The popular Italian cookie traces its origins to Roman times. The Roman biscotti were more about function food for travelers rather than a pleasurable treat for diners.Originally made as a long-shelf-life food for travelers and carried by the Roman Legions,Biscotti were a staple of the diet of theRoman Legions.Roman Legions had appreciated their long storage ability so did contemporary soldiers, sailors and fisherman. Pliny The Elder boasted that they would be edible for centuries. Biscotti were a staple of the diet of the Roman Legions. After the fall of the Roman empire cuisine flowered with the Renaissance. Biscotti emerged in Tuscany, credited to a Tuscan baker who served them with the local sweet dessert wine calledVin Santo(holy wine) This traditionalTuscanwineis made fromTrebbianoandMalvasiagrapes. Biscotti’s dry, crunchy texture was deemed to be the perfect medium to soak up the sweet local wine. Centuries later, many still agree that dipping biscotti into Vin Santo is a perfect way to end a meal, or while away an hour at a cafe. There are many recipes for biscotti, they may be categorized into two distinct categories (excluding flavorings): Biscotti made with butter and those made without butter or oil. The butter creates a more tender biscuit while those without butter are drier and harder. The butterless biscotti are wonderful with a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of Port or Vin Santo. Today we enjoy biscotti as an accompaniment to cappuccino and with Vin Santo.
