Sharing A Birthday With A Relative

There are 365 days in a year. The odds are definitely against having a baby born on the same day as yourself (the parent), a sibling or other family member / relative. Yet, I find myself surrounded by people who share the same birthday as another member of their family. I have friends who share birthdays with one of their children. I even know siblings who share the same birthday and I'm not referring to twins. ; ) On a personal level, my grand daugther was due to be born on March 13th of 2006. Her actual birth was on March 8th. Had she been born on March 13th, she would have shared the same birthday as her cousin and her aunt. How odd is it that one family could have three family members sharing the same birthday? One would believe that with 365 days, the odds of landing on that one particular same day wouldn't be likely...yet look at the scenerio I just said. It amazes me! I thought it would have been pretty cool had they all shared the same birthday. My daughter, on the other hand, was not too pleased about it. She felt that having to share a birthday with another family member, especially as a child, took a little away from them. She believes that the celebration should be all about you on your birthday and that a child shouldn't have to share a cake or have a joint party because they will somehow be slighted. Needless to say, she was overcome with relief when my grand daughter was born on the 8th instead! Now, granted, millions of people share the same birthday across the world. However, those millions of people don't belong in the same immediate family.  I wondered why my daughter very much did not want her child to share the same birthday as another family member....what made her think it would be so "slighting" in the first place? Perhaps it's because she was born on New Years Eve herself and has always disliked that she shared her birthday with a holiday. To me, a New Years Eve birthday is awesome! I mean, come on, there is ALWAYS somewhere to go or something to do.  My daughter, however, has always felt that it took away from her celebration, if you will. I guess that plays a role in why she didn't want her daughter to have to share a birthday with anyone close to her. All of this pondering made me question how many people feel the same as she does. If you had the choice, would you want your child to share the same birthday as you or another family member? If you didn't have a choice in the matter, would you be upset in some way? Would you prefer having the birthdays a few days apart rather than on the same day? I'd love to hear from you! ~Angie  A.K.A. The Diaper Baker ...read more

Pregnancy: The Big News

Some plan for so long for the miraculous event of a pregnancy to occur.  Others had a little "oopsie daisy".  The home pregnancy test is showing a positive sign...now what???  You've just found out you're pregnant and chances are you have hundreds of things racing through your mind.  The question I would like to know is... HOW DID YOU HANDLE ANNOUNCING THE IMPENDING LIFE CHANGING EVENT? I found out that I was pregnant courtesy of a home pregnancy test....ok, actually three tests....hey, I wanted to be sure about it.  My husband was at work at the time and I had three hours and counting until his arrival.  I practiced in front of the mirror how I would tell him the news.  I wanted it to be perfect.  I knew he'd be thrilled, but I still wanted to break the news just right.  I thought about "Hi honey.  How was work?  What would you like for dinner tonight?  Oh, by the way, we're having a baby".  Just didn't seem to cut it!  So, I went the practical route....  I left the positive test on the counter next to the bathroom sink and waited for him to find it himself!  : ) Now, I ask...how did you or someone you know share their BIG news? ...read more

The "birth" of The Diaper Baker

I am asked quite often the notorious question of how The Diaper Baker was created.  I would like to share the "birth" story.... Ten years ago I attended a baby shower where the mom-to-be received a diaper cake.  It was a tower of diapers.  I thought to myself "Now there's a gift that she REALLY needs".  Diapers Diapers Diapers!! A few years later my daughter found out she was pregnant with my very first grand-daughter.  As a proud grandma-to-be, I wanted to give my daughter the most memorable baby shower EVER!!  I went out and bought everything you can think of....new baby clothes, socks, shoes, booties, hats, mittens, toys, teethers, rattles....and let's not forget the diapers!!  You name it and I probably bought it!! I decided I was going to create a diaper cake for my daughter's baby shower. I did it just as I had seen years prior at the showe I attended.  As I placed the final tier of diapers on top of the cake I stepped back and thought to myself "Not that the most ATTRACTIVE thing, now is it?"  Yes, it's definitely useful, but very boring.  It was then that I glanced down at all of the shopping bags I had accumulated filled with the items I mentioned earlier (bibs, socks, shoes, teethers, etc.) and thought "What if I could make a diaper cake FILLED with all of these items that radiated beauty???"  My mind was racing with different thoughts and ideas.  I wrapped the tiers of the cake with plush blankets and hooded towels, the top tier with burpcloths and washcloths.  I placed an 8 oz bottle in the center of the diapers, holding the tiers together.  I began adding on all of the items, plus more, and when all was said and done I had this absolutely adorable, beautiful diaper cake before me.  I placed it on the table as I began decorating for her baby shower.  My younger daughter was the first to arrive and continuously complimented me on the CENTERPIECE I had made.  Centerpiece????  Wow...she was right.  Not only was this a unique gift, but it was a gorgeous centerpiece!!  Two gifts in one!  FANTASTIC!! The guests started to arrive and one-by-one I was getting asked where the centerpiece was purchased from, where did I find such an exquisite gift, was that a cake made of diapers???  Everyone was amazed at my work!!  My daughter was the last to arrive as it was a surprise shower for her.  The look on her face was priceless when she saw the gift / centerpiece I had made for her.  Tears filled up in her eyes with a smile ear-to-ear.  I must admit as a mother, seeing your child (regardless of their age) that happy gives YOU complete joy.  I decided then and there that I wanted to give others the same feeling that we had....and The Diaper Baker was born!!   ...read more
