Happiness

What makes you happy?  Working hard, being outside, being creative?  It's different for all of us.  We are happier if we pay attention to all of the different parts of our life.  When we feel like we have balanced ourselves out we feel more satisfied.  So the balance to working hard is to play.  Just like if you were on a seesaw - the part of you sitting on one side is hard working and the part of you sitting on the other is the playful you. Remember trying to balance the see saw and holding it in mid - air?. Make both parts happy - and get some extra benefit at the same time.  Come make pottery.  You will engage the creative part of your brain and  at the same time balance out that hard working part of you. In the end you will end up with a real object or maybe several real objects that you created.  Come take a spin on a potters wheel - it's a very Zen  - like experience.  Relaxing, fun, playful, and productive. ...read more

Why Pottery?

Sometimes we feel stressed because we can't focus on one thing.  We have to multitask at work and home. Your brain needs some downtime and often an activity that will allow you to totally focus will help.  There are several activities that help you focus while relaxing you at the same time, art, sports, meditation.  I think Pottery, working with clay and horseback riding are 2 activities that help you get out of your own head full of stress, help you relax and are both a sort of meditation.  You have to focus on what you are doing for both activities.  If you are hand building or wheel throwing clay, you need to look at what you are doing and make decisions as you go, in the process you focus, relax, and laugh (particularly when your cell phone rings and you can't answer because your hands are totally covered with clay).  Horseback riding has the same effect. That is a live animal under you, not a motorcycle, you have to concentrate and try to communicate with that horse, no time for day dreaming or answering a phone. So for a few hours every week, I recommend pottery, come on over to my studio in Clermont Florida.  I have the clay, the tools, and the kiln.  You just have to show up.  Welcome! http://PotteryCreative.com ...read more
