Be Aware of "No Tent" Treatments

Be Aware of "No Tent" Treatments  Fumigation vs Spot Treatment Southeastern drywood termites (Incisitermes snyderi) are found in both natural and man-made enviroments. They are responsible for most of the drywood damage in the sunshine state. They are easily identified by their six sided fecal pellets or their three veined wings. There are two treatments available for these tiny pests. Tent fumigation is the only proven method; though you will also be offered a spot treatment that may sometimes work. Fumigants in gaseous form can typically reach pests in areas that sprays or powders cannot. The drywood termite is seldom seen and that is why tent fumigation is so effective. It easily penetrates wood products such as walls, floor joists, trusses, plywood, window sills and paneling, all the places where drywood termites reside. Not only will it rid your home of termites; but it will also eliminate any other pest problems you may be having at that time.  Tent fumigation with Zythor or Vikane gas (sulfuryl fluoride) requires the occupants to move out of the home for two nights. The structure is covered with large tarps and tightly sealed to the ground with sand or water bags. The gas is then released into the structure. The amount of gas is carefully calculated for each individaul home. On the third day, the home is cleared by a licensed professional and is then, and only then, safe for the homeowner to go back in. The spot treatment, in most cases, requires drilling into window sills, door frames and wall voids. This treatment can be successful as long as the termites gallery is located and you don't mind the unsitley cosmetic damage left from the drill holes. How many holes do you want in your walls until the colony has been found? Another down side to spot treatmenting is that it can become very time consuming and require multiple visits (and multiple payments! Usually around $75 per drill hole...OUCH! You may actually be paying MORE money in the long run!). Localized treatments should never be considered in the presents of swarming termites because one colony can become many colonies and may be in multiple areas in the home. Subterranean Termites

Subterranean Termite Prevention and Control The best control of subterranean termites is prevention. The best time to provide protection against termites is during the planning and construction of a building. Prevention should include: Removal of all stumps, roots, wood, and similar materials from the building site before construction is begun. Removal of all form boards and grade stakes used in construction. There should be no contact between the building woodwork and the soil or fill. Exterior woodwork should be located a minimum of 6 inches above ground and beams in crawl spaces at least 18 inches above ground to provide ample space to make future inspections. Ventilation openings in foundations should be designed to prevent dead air pockets and of sufficient size to assure frequent changes of air -- at least 2 sq. ft. to 25 running feet of outside foundation wall. This helps keep the ground dry and unfavorable for termites. Landscape plants and irrigation should not be placed within two feet of the foundation wall. Thorough annual inspections should be conducted to discover evidence of wood damage or termite activity such as shelter tubes on foundation surfaces, discarded wings or adult termites. Any wood that contacts the soil, such as fence posts, poles and general foundation structures, should be commercially pressure treated, and should not be attached to house. ...read more
