Medication Station

5.0

By PeterR

I worked with Nancy O'Dea on the rental of a "travel" wheelchair, for a cruise. Thanks to having the wheelchair, it was a successful trip. Nancy ensured that we were able to pick up the day before it was needed and return in a day after the cruise. The unit was new and, obviously, in excellent, clean condition and the rental rate was VERY AFFORDABLE! They are also a(compounding, I think) pharmacy and pride themselves on being both fast and affordable! ...read more

Why do my parents keep falling?

This seems to be a question that many of us have been asking and we are not alone.  According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention thousands of senior Americans fall at home each year.  In 2002, almost 13,000 seniors aged 65 and older died and over 1.5 million were treated inemergencyrooms as a result of falling.  And it isn't getting better.  In 2007 over 18,000 seniors died from injuries sustained from falling. So what can we do to lower the fall risk?1) Exercise Regularly- Studies show that seniors who participate in regular exercise are stronger, have better balance and are less likely to fall.2) Wear Proper Footwear-  Many falls could have been avoided with the use of supportive shoes that fit properly.  Heels, sandals and slippers are a no-no.  And yes I am talking mostly to you ladies.3) Check Medications- You should check with your doctor to discuss all of your medication and the effects they may have on you.  Dizziness and drowsiness are possible side effects of many of our medications today.  Over the counter medications may have similar effects.4) Get Regular Hearing and Eyesight Exams- You should have your hearing checked at least once a year and if glasses are prescribed you must wear them.  Hearing loss has strong ties to poor balance so if hearing aids are necessary then wear them.  And yes I am mostly talking to you men.5) Wear a Medical Alert Emergency Button- Sometimes refered to aMedical Alert System.  Ok, so it won't keep you off the floor but you will be darn glad you have it in the event of an emergency.  Every single person that ever fell and hurt themselves did not think they were at a risk for falls.  A Medical Alarm can be the difference between live and death in an emergency situation.Falls although common can be prevented or at least the risk of falling can be reduced by following the above simple guidelines.  Take a few simple precautions today so that you will not be part of a statistic tomorrow. For more info go to: www.Alert365.com ...read more
