Dentistry from the Heart

This morning, my husband left for work around 6 am and I spoke to him around 8. He told me about this massive gathering of cars and people at the main intersection of our housing complex. A small dental office was at that very corner.  For about a month or two there has been a sign that readFree Dental Care 2/12/10.  I think the sign even added something likeDentistry from the Heart. After being a frequent customer of this sign I finally decided to call the dentist to see what this was all about.  To my surprise this Dental Office was offering free tooth extraction, cavity fillings and more on a first come first serve basis from 7am-4pm. With further research I found out that this was their 4 or 5 year doing this.  I thought to myself WOW, should I prepare to camp outside for such an awesome event. Just as I started to dream of my cavities getting taken care of at no cost to me, my 10 month old started crying as if he knew exactly what I was thinking….  I quickly came to my senses and thought to myself that the right decision for me would be: to NOT stand outside for hours in the cold rain, with a 10month old, when this wasn't a grave situation for me.  However for those in desperation it saddened me to think that they would HAVE to choose. For example last year,  Alfred Trettner, 25, was first in line. He heard about the free clinic and took two busses up from Kissimmee and arrived at 12:30am. "I cut my tongue about four times a week because my broken teeth are razor sharp. I want to get 8 hours sleep without getting up. I'm in pain," he said.  Another person,  "I've had Medicaid for a couple years and I have yet to find one that's accepting, so this is a blessing," said mother Catri Thompson, who brought her young son.  After my husband informed me of the masses adorning the streets for free dental care, I remembered that its cold, it's raining, and imagined that the first person in line must have arrived from midnight…..hours before the opening at 7am. For something that we oftentimes think that we can go without, dental care, there is a genuine need out there that very few doctors would even try to alleviate.  Sometimes life is just about doing what is right. This is what nonprofit organizations, some other social ventures, and few corporations really try to do. Life shouldn't be about who can make the most money. It's not about being too liberal or over conservative.  It's not about judging a nation or its people and its policies, it's merely about doing what we think is just plain correct—what our hearts compel us to do, love one another.  Of course everyone can and will argue what is EXACTLY morally right considering some circumstances, but I hope that we can all agree that in the most day-to-day of situations there are things that are just universally the right thing to do!  I love the everyday people that just really try to make a difference.  No arduous paperwork, no embarrassment, no monetary expectations, no expectations at all, just simple solutions to service genuine needs. Serving one another, that's true love.  Thankswww.asofttouchdental.comand Happy Valentines weekend to all. ...read more
