Preparing students to modify their learning

This new academic year would be different from the previous years as my college has started to develop the new trend of introducing the use of PBL (Project Based Learning) and have been trying to put some bunches of roses in my department – which is too slow to adopt the new changes. I understand that math is the perfect subject which can go side by side with the PBL, but it’s very hard to assess what’s taking it long to implement.  I am not, in any case, opposing the innovations as I always allow my students to move according to their own pace. In fact, many of my co-teachers are opposing the way of my teaching which is a much more competency based. But still, the big picture was missing from the galore of my students who were mastering in their skills with perfect alignment of the practice worksheets and the standards of knowledge. This was presenting a clear picture of critical thinking and their ability to solve the problems on their own.  The LOVE for PBL PBL is the stand-out tool to evaluate the context of skills and to help the students in understanding the concept and also to make them feel the challenge in terms of their creativity and applying of the grit with their imaginative critical problem-solving skills. During the course of student, some of my students were also studying psychology and thus it was easy for me to compare the strands through the collaboration of both subjects for a lesson. But, the authentication of the plan must be monitored accordingly to get the observation perfect.   The plan was set and students took three weeks for the observation and research compilation to generate the results of their observation.  Project Framework  Now, the only thing from my end was the creation of the framework for their projects in which I need to make sure that all students were participating and also supporting each other during the course of the project. I made four groups of students and my best students as their group leaders.  I just needed time to assess their performances and thus planned a rubric with different standards that these students will be following. The rubrics were divided into strands depicting the description of the project and the accomplishing part for each stage.  As a mini-plan, I explained the students the feasibility of using technology for their research which would be easy for them to analyze the data and to conduct the statement recording.  The authentication in the learning It was an amazing feeling for me as a teacher as my students were working on their own for the first time during the year and were also participating as a debate to get the right answers for their research questions. All 27 students participated and the variables were defining the concept very clearly. Before collaboration, my students used the biased sample method, but this time around they came with a brilliant idea organically, and I was surprised to hear their ideas.  Students just needed the idea of how to gather the recorded data. According to their plan, the data collection was also a huge challenge as the time stamps were being introduced for the first time. This took a lot of time around five to six classes to gather the collection and yet another three to four classes to translate the data accordingly. This project was a perfect plan to get the differentiation between the two types of surveys and functioning of the observational type of studies. There were some human errors also in their survey, which I checked and cleared, but all in all their work was really outstanding and they were now becoming statisticians in quick time.  Final thoughts I did not want my students to feed them with different formulas and definitions during the course of the project, instead, I wanted them to make this project means for their future courses. PBL taught me to make them learn through the real world and to present their findings to different groups of their batch and show them your hard work.  The excitement of the students was speaking the hard work and the objective behind their research.
