Ever had a problem with a spray tan? Find out why in this easy to understand trouble shooting guide by Organic Body Bar............. What to do if the back of your legs look streaky after the first shower: This happens when you do not fully wash off the back of your legs, causing the bronzer to "streak" with water and dry that way. We suggest getting the back of your legs wet and washing them again. If that doesn't fix it then please call us and we will get you back in for a free touch up (must call within our 24 Hours Guarantee period).......................... What to do if you tan is fading unevenly: Although we use the highest quality tanning solutions that are Aloe Vera based are less likely to fade unevenly, your body sheds thousands of skin cells per day in an uneven pattern. Also the darker the tan, the more likely to have an uneven fade if you have gone a lot darker than your natural skin color. Things like hormones, medication, swimming and traveling to another climate will also affect your fade. There are also a LOT of perfumes, lotions and products that will cause your tan to turn patchy. TO PREVENT THIS we recommend a tan extending lotion which will gently add a small amount of color to your new skin cells as the dead skin sheds - thus blending your natural skin to your fading tan. If you did not get the lotion at the time of your spray but are experiencing a bad fade - please come by the store and you can purchase a lotion to help normalize the situation....................... Small "lighter" spots appearing on the chest are/or whole body: This is most likely from spraying perfume directly on your chest or bug spray directly on your body. Correct using a tan extending lotion. Next time, spray the product and walk through it rather than spraying directly onto your skin..................... Dark spots appearing all over the body after the tan develops (Typical on aged skin): If you have older or aging skin it can be difficult to work with and often one may see spots appear after spraying – like moles all over. The spots are actually a type of transparent mole, related to aged or UV damaged skin. They increase with age, and darken from sunless tanners, as the texture is dryer then surrounding skin, and they absorb solution unevenly. This is very common on the legs, which also have the most UV damage, on most women. It is very difficult to completely eradicate them. Some things that can help: 1) Not spraying too dark - we suggest a level 1 or 2. 2) Make sure skin is well exfoliated and use a PH Pre-Spray and a Hydro-firming Post Spray (The 3 Layer Tan) or at the very least the "Double Anti-Aging Tan" due to it's moisturizing properties because aged skin has many areas that may be a bit dryer and produce a dotty or uneven look in tanning. 3) Showering a little sooner, after 6- 8 hours to help the spots to absorb less. Or try the clear formulas with no bronzer added. 4) If you are used to tanning on a regular basis, take a break every 4-6 weeks. 5) Keep skin well moisturized!!!..................... White/lighter spots appearing after being in a hot tub or swimming pool: This happens due to the chlorine in the water - it actually "bleaches" out areas of the tan. A quick fix is to use your Tan Extending Lotion to get everything back on track.......................... What things to avoid while you have a spray tan: 1) Dove shower gel or soap and Oil of Olay Cleansers 2) Curel moisturizng lotion 3) Hair removal lotions like Nair, Veet, Jergens etc. 4) Anti-aging products that “renew,” “refresh” or exfoliate skin 5) AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), Glycolic, Lactic, Malic, Citric, and Tartaric Acids 6) BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy Acids) Salicylic Acid 7) Retin-A type products (Retin-A, Renovate, Tazorac, and Trefinoin) 8) Toners containing Witch Hazel or Alcohol 9) Anti-acne products that exfoliate the skin-Accutane or Salicylic Acid like ProActive, Clearisil, Clean & Clear etc. 10) Make up remover or eye make up remover that is oil-based (use oil free to be safe) 11) Bar soaps, especially deodorant varieties or anti-bacterial, can coat skin and lessen color development or fade tan 12) Using a loofa or a scrub mitt 13) Band-Aids or adhesive tape (can peel away tan when removed) 14) Facial masks or exfoliating scrubs or lotions 15) Waxing or sugar hair removal 16) Laser Hair Removal 17) Hair or skin lightening/bleaching products 18) Prolonged submersion in a hot tub, swimming pool with chlorine, salt water even a long hot bath can fade color. HOWEVER, simply using a tan extending lotion can prevent damage to your tan. 19) Women’s tans may also develop differently during various hormonal occurrences (ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy). It may be streaky, patchy, fade worse or produce a lighter, or no color tan................................. To be safe, simply purchase a tan extending lotion and a tan safe body wash! Is it safe to spray tan over tattoos?: Freshly tattooed or “broken” skin should never be sprayed. If you must spray but have a fresh tattoo, it needs to be covered and protected with medical gauze or bandaging.. We can hand draw in the spray tan around the edges of the tattoo so that the tattoo edges don't look pale. Tanning solution will normally not alter the color of a tattoo BUT white, pastel, or light colored tattoos may be temporarily darkened by the tanning solution. To prevent this effect, cover light colored tattoo area with a barrier cream. Please not that Organic Body Bar is not liable for any darkening or damage to tattoos and it's the clients responsibility to adequately bandage new tattoos prior to their appointment and to properly cover light colored tattoos with barrier cream at their appointment............... Skin has a greenish tint after being sprayed or turns green at some point during the life of the tan: This can happen if spray tan solution has expired and "gone bad" or if there is some type of foreign residue on the surface of the skin that reacts with the tanning solution. Here at the Body Bar we store and refrigerate our solutions and go through batches each week so this would never happen as a result of our solution. This means it is caused by sweat, lotion, perfume, cosmetics, soap, exfoliate products, deodorant residue, hair conditioner or shampoo, and other products on the skin surface. If feet are green it is from sweaty shoes or socks. Either worn to the salon sweaty, or sweaty footwear put on after being sprayed. Arm pits may turn green from sweat or deodorant and antiperspirant products. Legs that are discolored can be from shave products or lubricants, shave strips on razors, lotion applied to moisturize legs, sweat, exfoliates, cleansers. This is temporary and normally the green discoloration disappears after showering, and cleansing skin well. ANY Residue on the skin surface can also alter how well the solution penetrates, and even effect the way the tan develops and fades. Exfoliating with the proper prep scrub, using a PH balancer before spraying, using a Tan-Safe shower gel and extending lotion will prevent green issues especially with people who are athletic and tend to sweat a lot.................... Is it ok to spray over an existing spray tan?: This all depends on how the existing spray tan has faded. If you have been using the fade lotion and your skin all looks the same tone then yes! We can absolutely spray over the existing tan. If you're fading patchy due to the improper care of a spray tan then spraying over it will not "even it out" it will make it look worse in our opinion so in that case it's better to wait until it's fully faded and we can start fresh and be sure and send you home with the correct products to prevent the fading for next time................ Is it possible to remove a spray tan?: There is no safe way to 100% remove a spray tan without damaging your skin. If you are having a bad fade due to improper care or are having a bad reaction to the solution, we suggest gentle exfoliation and patience. Hot, long, soapy baths will help to dissolve the dead skin cells and a mixture of lemon juice, baking soda and olive oil is a good exfoliate. Please do not try and scrub your skin to the point of irritation or use chemical cleaners. Spray tans cannot be scrubbed off in one sitting....................
