For those that want to start using the pool before summer, we used to turn on the gas heater then suffer the incoming bill. It can cost $300-$500 to "start up" the pool heat, then up to a couple of hundred dollars a month to maintain it. If you can afford that, the Gas Company thanks you. But wouldn't it make more sense to use the sun's free energy? Of course there is an initial investment in equipment to capture that energy, but easily amortized over a few short years, and enjoyed for decades. Time to consider making better use of the larger investment in your backyard, not to mention the benefits of exercise and the priceless opportunity to share time and 'fun in the sun' with friends and family. Save the gas for the BBQ and jump into a solar-heated swimming pool. Kerry McDaniel, SunTrek Solar Heating Systems at 800 899-2295 (southern CA) ...read more

We entered the solar energy market in 1979 as a division of our commercial laundry equipment business. Offering solar hot water heating systems made a lot of sense to those clients who needed a lot of hot water for their laundramats, convalescent hospitals, motel lodging and apartments. And with a 25-55% State Income Tax Credit, it was easy to implement with a reasonable payback. But after 1981 the credits were gone and the systems now "cost" twice as much, lengthening the cost recovery. During that time we diversified into residential hot water heating systems and installed more than 500 residential systems, mostly in the San Fernando Valley where our office was located, between 1979-1981. After 1981, solar system sales was mostly for swimming pools, without tax credits, because the offset was the gas bill and extended comfort, or use of the pool investment. Then, in 2008 the Federal Tax Credits kicked in for PV and domestic-use hot water. There was initially a limit, but by 2009 the 30% Federal Tax Credit became UNLIMITED and continues today through 2016. This is a great thing for Americans wanting to 1) save on their energy costs, 2) offset the costs of using conventional utility-company supplied energy, 3) taking control of rising costs, and 4) becoming better citizens of planet Earth by reducing their demand on non-renewable energy resources. As long as you work with a reputable solar energy company, going solar is a good idea. Our company, SunTrek Solar Industries, licensed in the four south-western states of CA, AZ, NV and UT offers free videos to inform and help you understand how it works, how the credits apply, a review of systems installed, etc at www.YouTube.com/SolarNetwork Feel free to visit us. You may be hearing a lot about that 30% Federal Tax Credit for Replacement Windows, but you have to know that there are conditions for qualifying. Windows must be ordered with upgrades that bring both the U-Factor and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) to .30 or less (lower is better). Visit www.Galaxy-Exteriors.blogspot.com for more information. Also, that there is a $1,500 LIMIT on Energy Tax Credits, and an aggregate for all energy-qualified products in years 2009 and 2010 combined. If you haven't taken advantage of this Tax Credit, you have all year to get it done, but the qualifying products must be purchased, paid for and installed before December 31, 2010.
