How to Apply for a General Contractor's License

General Contractor's License

Applying for a contractor's license is a fairly straightforward process. Specific requirements will vary from state to state. Knowing where to find this information is half the battle. In this article you will be shown how to get the information needed to start the application process.

Before beginning the application process, be aware that in many states you need two licenses for contracting. Also keep in mind that licensing requirements will change depending on the type of construction you do.

BEFORE APPLYING FOR YOUR LICENSE

1. Check with your state to see what kind of license you will need, if any.

2. You must be 18 years of age or older.

3. You will need proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.

4. Two pass-port sized photos will be required.

5. If you hold any other occupational license, have the documentation ready for inspection.

6. Any citations, violations or liens against you involving construction work will need explanation.

APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Download the application form online from your official state web site or order it by calling your local or state licensing authority.

2. Fill out the application thoroughly.

3. Include your experience, business references, any lawsuits or complaints you may have had, as well as, a financial statement.

4. You may have to take a test on construction management and/or a specific trade, the details of which vary from state to state.

5. Pay any and all testing and licensing fees.
