I made my first visit to Number 1 Hair and Nails. I am somewhat salonphobic, but Anna made me feel like an old friend. The salon is clean and efficient, and the prices are quite reasonable. Anna's hair coloring technique was a great success. I highly recommend that you give the place a try. It is behind 24-Hour Fitness on La Paz near the freeway. ...read more

Permament Hair Removal - Electrolysis vs. Laser

Did you know that electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal approved by the FDA???  Electrolysis has been in use since 1875. WOW – that’s a long time.I decided to check it out and found why laser was not included on the approval list.  Laser is only a reduction or thinning out of hair so the FDA won’t allow laser companies to promote their service as permanent. Some people online even stated that their hair growth worsened after laser treatments.  I checked into the safety of laser hair removal and found out that it emits Non-Ionizing Radiation. What the heck is Non-Ionizing Radiation??? After a Google search I found the following two paragraphs on the US Department of Labor Occupational Safety&Health; Administration website.  “Non-ionizing radiation is described as a series of energy waves composed of oscillating electric and magnetic fields traveling at the speed of light. Non-ionizing radiation includes the spectrum of ultraviolet (UV), visible light, infrared (IR), microwave (MW), radio frequency (RF), and extremely low frequency (ELF).Lasers commonly operate in the UV, visible, and IR frequencies. Non-ionizing radiation is found in a wide range of occupational settings and can pose a considerable health risk to potentially exposed workers if not properly controlled. Laser HazardsLasers typically emit optical (UV, visible light, IR) radiations and are primarily an eye and skin hazard. Common lasers include CO IR laser; helium - neon, neodymium YAG, and ruby visible lasers, and the Nitrogen UV laser.” I remember my mom constantly saying “don’t stand in front of the microwave”. If lasers are dangerous, especially around the eye area, why are people using laser to have work done on their eyebrows? I’ll be back with more on the hazards of electrolysis. Be safe and thanks for listening. Judy ...read more
