Asia has used all of it's available IPv4 address spaces. North America is set to run out next. We've known for the last ten years that IPv4 address spaces would run out, predicted when they would run out and have done nothing about it. This is bad for everyone except the major players, they will make a lot of money selling IPv4 addresses which in my opinion they should NOT be allowed to do. Intentionally withholding IPv6 from the general public is really holding us hostage. Anti-trust comes to mind here. Europe has been using IPv6 addresses for a few years, granted their infrastructure is not what North America's is, but we should have begun this IPv6 rollout 5 years ago. Distributed denial of service. The act of: saturating a target machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately. Bad news all around. If your business is based partially or totally on the internet Ddos attacks will be expensive. I've used shared hosting, virtual private hosting, managed and unmanaged hosting, dedicated servers, co-located servers. There are pro's and con's for each but all are susceptible to Ddos. So what do you do? Have a plan. Unless you or your business are personally the focus of the attack, rededundant services could make a difference. Backup email services, alternate domain names, additional bandwidth. Get to know your hosting company and their techs. Do your homework, being prepared is key. Lost?
