How to Troubleshoot Sound Problems With Toshiba Laptops

A laptop without sound is a laptop with very little value. Many of the simple tasks that we take for granted can no longer be accomplished without sound. But, before you send your Toshiba laptop off to a computer repair shop, make sure it is not a problem you can fix yourself.

  1. If you are not hearing any sound coming from your Toshiba laptop, make sure that the sound is not muted. Although it sounds simple, this can be an easy step to forget. Look at the icons in the system tray located at the bottom right of the screen. If the speaker icon has a red slash through it, the sound has been muted. Double click the icon and uncheck the box that says "Mute."

  2. If your sound is still not working, ensure that your laptop has the proper driver. A driver is a file that helps you communicate with the speaker. Without a driver, the computer and speaker cannot communicate with each other. Go to Toshiba's website and download the appropriate driver. Follow the prompts to install the software, then restart your computer.

  3. If this step does not work, check to see if the speakers themselves are broken or if the entire sound system is inoperable. Get a set of headphones or earbuds and hook them to the audio out jack. If you can hear sound, then the problem is just with the speakers themselves. If you still hear nothing, then your sound system is not working properly. Either way, it would be best to take your laptop to a computer repair specialist for further work.
