This provider was to build a usable and complete nook (with storage) for a small kitchen condo. After going through the Angie's List Snap Fix option on my phone, I provided the SnapFix Concierge Pinterest photos of the style of work that I wanted to be completed and they tasked me out to Doug Stephenson Fine Wood Working & Home Services . He came by to get a visual on the work and asked us if we wanted to use stained wood or have the wood painted. With the use of stained wood, he stated the quote would be more expensive, so we went with painted wood. He called a few days later and provided a verbal quote of $2200 for the work over the phone. We knew that there would be an above and beyond cost to purchase the multipurpose foam and material for the seating in the nook and had already began looking at outside sources for this requirement. However, Doug did not provide insight that painting was not included in estimate until after the job was complete and he had already been paid. During this entire estimate and building process, he asked us what color we wanted to use (which would mean he had factored in the painting) and when we would be available for two days straight for his painting sub contractor (or "Paint Guy" according to Doug). These two reasons, plus the fact that he didn't point out that painting would be above and beyond, like the foam padding, led us to believe that he was scamming us. We addressed him regarding his inability to complete the project, he stated, "I'm just a carpenter, not a painter". That was never a factor in quote and was very unprofessional. No attempt was made to be remotely understanding of the fact that his verbal quote was lacking this important information and generally he showed his truly unprofessional behavior by thinking that it is normal to pay a general contractor for complete services and the sub contractor for their independent work. I've been in the Department of Defense contracting realm for quite a few years and never have I had to pay a general and a subcontractor individually. I don't think home services is to far off the mark for that to be applicable as well. Also, if you look at the title of his business, Doug Stephenson Fine Wood Working & Home Services , nowhere does it imply that he is ONLY a carpenter.
