Fall into a Vehicle Maintenance Program

Fall into a Vehicle Maintenance Program  October is Fall Car Care Month, the perfect time to fall into a vehicle maintenance program and get your car ready for the challenges of harsh winter weather.“A thorough inspection of your vehicle during Fall Car Care Month will go a long way toward ensuring safety and dependability when temperatures drop and severe winter weather strikes,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A routine maintenance program also makes financial sense, extending useful vehicle life and helping avoid costly repairs down the road.” the Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating at its best:1.Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.2.Check the hoses and beltsto make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.3.Check the batteryand replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.4.Check the brake systemannually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.5.Inspect the exhaust systemfor leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.6.Schedule a tune-upto help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.7.Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systemas proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.8.Inspect the steering and suspension systemannually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.9.Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.10.Check the wipers and lightingso that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation. To help motorists follow a vehicle maintenance program, a free digital Car Care Guide can be found on the council’s website atwww.carcare.org/car-care-guide. The guide is available in English and Spanish, and includes information on service interval schedules, questions to ask a technician and tips to drive smart and save money. ...read more

Cold Facts About A/C Refrigerant

Make Sure Vehicle Lights Shine Bright for Safe Spring Driving

Replace Your Vehicle's Belts, Hoses Regularly

Losing a belt today can mean big trouble for the engine tomorrow. Serpentine belts are used on most engines to turn the water pump, alternator, power steering, and air-conditioning compressor. If a belt snaps, you may be stranded. A blown hose could result in an overheated engine and can cause additional engine damage. "It's not easy to know the true condition of a belt or hose by its outward appearance, because most belts and hoses fail from the inside out," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council, an automotive consumer education group. "Replace belts, radiator and heater hoses at specific recommended intervals to prevent your car from breaking down." Hoses should be checked at each oil change for age hardening (or softening) by pinching. Any hose that feels rock-hard or mushy is due for replacement. Leaking, visible cracks, blistering or any other visible damage on the outside of the hose also indicates a need for replacement.  The clamps should be replaced when new hoses are installed. V-belts should be replaced every three to four years or 40,000 to 50,000 miles. V-belts and serpentine belts should be checked for looseness. Replace the timing belt between 60,000 and 90,000 miles or based on the interval specified in the owner's manual. Nearly one-third of all cars and light trucks have belts or hoses that should probably be replaced. Proper maintenance of your vehicle's belts and hoses is an easy way to protect your car's reliability and prevent more costly repairs down the line. ...read more

I shopped around for a place to take my 1984 Chrysler New Yorker to get checked prior to taking it for a smog check. The shop that I first took it to was run by two partners - the first partner told me that a spark plug was skipping and that the smog test would pick up on this and thus fail my check and to repair it was going to cost me 1K. His partner looked at him and questioned his stupidity and so I continued shopping for a good mechanic that I could trust. \t\n\t\nI have been going to Custom World now for over 1 year. I drive 1 plus hours out of my way and refer family and friends there as I know that Judd and his boys will do the job right and are not out to rape me with the price. I even had an issue with my lock on the gas door where it would not lock and I mentioned it to Judd one day while I was at his shop and in 20 minutes he welded a piece to fix the lock. These guys know what they are doing and are soooo professional in their field that they can think inside and outside of the box to fix your car. \t\n\t\nAs an added point, every time I take my car for repair they always fix it and if they notice something else needs attention fix that too.... like the door panel that was falling off of my passenger side - Judd fixed this in no time and for no addition charge. \t\n\t\nThese guys are truly Blue White Diamonds - I recommend anyone who is looking for good, loyal service with out being rapped to go see Judd at Custom World Automotive. \t\n\t\nI take my car and leave it and pick it up and never question the bill this is how good they are! \t\n\t\nThanks Juddie! ...read more
