I'm sure many have seen our Facebook Postings -  Have you always wanted to own a piece of the North Star?  Well now is your chance!  We have decided to sell the duplex that has been shut down for years in an effort to make room for more parking in anticipation of opening the main lodge this year as a community center.  The details can be viewed at http://nmi.craigslist.org/mat/2766404188.html  I have about a dozen more pictures for those who are interested.    After meeting for about 3 hours last week with a representative of the State of Michigan SBA,  we decided to take his advice.  "Look at the bottom line, if it is just sitting there, wasting space, figure out how that space can help your business."   We have long wanted to open the main lodge, not as sleeping quarters, but as a central meeting place for all guests to enjoy.  That's why we built the large BBQ there.  The duplex we are looking to sell was one of the first cabins constructed.  It has large polished beams that run across the ceiling and beautiful cabinets in the kitchens and bedrooms.  It saddens us to do this, but the foundation that this cabin sits on is cracked, the water pipes are broken as well as the septic pipes.  It was closed for a while before we bought the North Star and has been closed ever since.  This is the unit we are referring to - it is 46 feet wide in the front.  All windows, doors, cabinets, and whatever else comes with it!  Okay, except the cut stone chimneys and fireplaces.  If you can figure out how to move those and you want those, well that is open to negotiations too!  The inside has beautiful knotty pine that is so beautiful, only aging could have produced that effect!  There are long round beams that were not caught in this picture, but span the length and width across the ceiling.  This is the snackbar and to the left the bedroom, to the right the bathroom.  The outside of the quarter round 6" wide boards are similarly preserved, although needing either sanding and staining or paint.   If you think you would like this little bit of history to put on your own property, give us a call!  ...read more

As the sun is shining, I'm looking out my window - you know my little perch/office where I can see the whole resort, the comings and goings - and the colors are just amazing!  I'd say we're close to 50%.  The bird hunters are coming up as the leaves are falling off the trees and the birds are jumping out in abundance this year.  The bow deer hunters are traversing the woods looking for the deer that are feeding on hunormous acrorns - some as big around as a quarter.  I kid you not!  Not as bright as I would have liked it to come out, but these are the colors as they are today, Oct 3, 2010.  Of note, the AuSable Valley Railroad is open for 1 more weekend this year, that being next weekend, Oct 8, 9 and 10.  Only $5 per adult for a 20 minute ride thru some spectacular parts of the forest.  There is still time to take a canoe trip down the mighty AuSable to view the fall colors and wildlife to be seen on the banks and in the forest.  We have many canoe liveries to cater to you!  As fall sets in, I really miss summer.  All of our friends who have become like family (you all know who you are and I promise not to name names here! Oh, how do you teach and old dog new tricks. Everyone loves and knows Mojo here at the North Star.  He's been through so much, poor thing!  First the porcupine - where the vet quit counting at over 200 quills and that was just inside his mouth!  His next wild adventure was when he snuck up on a sleeping bear (this is per DNR's inspection of his injuries) and was quite the limping dog while he healed.  Now as we are getting ready for all of our wonderful regular and to be regular guests this summer, he gets hit by a pickup truck!   He survived tho !  He completely shattered his femur bone just before it connects to the hip bone.  He hobbles along and is healing well why we accumulate the funds we need for his not so cheap surgery.  Long story short Mojo says "come on up, I'm waiting for you and those yummy handouts you give me in exchange for my 24 hour protection!"  See you all soon, Karen, Steve and the girls  ...read more

Well for starters as explained in our previous post, we no longer take credit cards.  This is political stand of sorts - we are tired of the bankers getting richer off of our money and your money.  They got most of the stimulus money, where's ours?  Also new in 2010 - fingers crossed as we try to get the lodge open and ready to rent by June 2010.  Karaoke in the Community Area starting May 1 to be open on Friday and Saturday.  Free to registered guests, however open to the public or your visitors who must obtain a $5 visitors pass.  Note with a visitors pass you also have access to all other amenities.  Also we hope to have new flooring in all of the buildings by May.  Painting of all exteriors are also in the plans.  That's all for now as we pray for more snow so all of our snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoe friends can come up and have fun. Money.  It all comes down to dollars and sense folks.   Long story short - we are no longer accepting credit or debit cards.  Check or cash only.  Here's the long story: I recently obtained the services of a credit card processor.   They were too good to be true.  Took really good care of us.  I can't tell you the name of the processor or the banks involved for fear of being accused of libel/slander, (but you can e-mail me for that private information).    The processor did everything as promised.  In June, 2009 we put $3000 in credit cards thru.  They only charged me $43 - that was exactly as promised 1.67% of our total sales.  I can live with that.   The charges for July were higher, but to be expected as we do process more cards in July.   August charges were even HIGHER!  What happened with our fees?   I figured it out.  Our credit card processor had changed banks from "Good Bank" to "Bad Bank", who I know all too well -- but that's a whole different story.   In September 2009 we again processed about $3,000 in credit cards.  Our fees?  Well you won't believe it!!   $206 dollars - 6.67%.   You know, I could do a lot with this $206, especially in these economic times -- such as putting new pots and pans in ALL of the cabins, maybe a few clocks, or pictures for the walls.  $206 would buy 8 bundles of the wood that our guests love to burn LOL   But to absolutely throw away $206 just for the "luxury" of accepting credit cards?  Sorry.  I refuse.  I won't do it.  I won't pay to "allow" the use of your money or our money.   As a business it costs us a lot each and every year to take credit and/or debit cards.  As a business owner I have to ask myself, do I really need that expense.  NO I do not.   Do my customers need that expense.  NO they do not.   Another tid-bit.  When you use a credit or debit card at a merchant I'm sure you know that your account is debited right away.  But do you know that the merchant will NOT receive those funds for 2-4 days?  My question is this - where is that money during those 2-4 days and who is collecting interest off of that money?  Answer: the banks or the credit card processor (which is ultimately a bank).   So we have this:                         The consumer is charged a fee for using a credit card&some; debit cards                       The merchant is charged a fee for using debit and credit cards both.                        Someone is collecting interest during the "transfer period".   Ask yourself America - why are we paying to use our own money?  The banks keep getting richer and we keep getting poorer when trying to use our hard earned money.   Just imagine if everyone quit using their debit/credit cards what a saving it would be to all merchants.  Could you just imagine the fees of say Wal-Mart?  Their bill has to be really high!  If they didn't have that bill, would not the "cost of goods" come down?   About 20 years ago, we owned a nice Fabric Store and I'll never forget a customer who always came in with a shopping bag.  I asked her one day "Kay why? Why not just get a bag?"  She said she lived in Europe for a while and most people there shopped with bags similar to hers because "Bags cost money and drive up the price of goods."  I've never forgotten that statement.   Bottom line folks with our credit card processing fees I either have to raise our "price of goods" meaning raising the price of rentals on the cabins, motel and camping or I have to choose to stop taking credit/debit cards.  We have chosen the latter. You can now unload and ride your ATV or ORV directly from the North Star!  The ordinance PASSED!  We got there a couple of minutes before 10 a.m.  It was not only "standing room only" but a spill out of people into the hall of about 10+ of us.  They had passed the ordinance just before we got there.  Bob of the OCRRA congratulated the Board and all persons who had a hand in working together on this.  He did state, however, that lots of "tweaking" will be done in the upcoming months.  Bob had also attended a Road Commission meeting this morning and was asked "well don't we have the option to close 30% of the county roads?"  Not sure what will come of that. Very important - you CAN NOT ride on any State Highways (M33 or M72 for example) or on any US State Forestry Roads We do have maps of the US forestry roads, also available online per DNR rep that was there or at the new DNR office  - however not all of them are obvious if a road is named, does not necessarily mean it isn't a forestry road - have to look for brown placards that are about 2 feet high with 4 numbers on them.  Note the fine for being on one of these roads is $175.00.  As I said, there is tweeking that is yet to be done, but the county roads are open as of this Friday, May 15.   There are separate Township meetings where the Township I guess can also say yeah or nay - Greenwood meeting is tonight.  Big Creek is May 19.  We did stop by the Oscoda County Sheriff's department this morning after the meeting and verified that  YES you can now unload and ride directly from the North Star!  The Deputy wanted me to be sure to let all of guests know that even tho these county roads are open, that the speed limit is 25 mph for an ATV/ORV.   I'll post more as I find stuff out.  Karen ...read more

The proposal by the commissioners includes opening every road in the county, except state highways and forest service roads. The board will make a decision on the proposed ordinance at its Tuesday, May 12 board meeting. According to the proposal, county roads could be open to ORV traffic beginning Friday, May 15. Commissioners Michael Hunt and Joe Stone opposed the proposal, which was presented by commissioner Dennis Kauffman. Hunt said he heard someone might present a proposal to open all the roads prior to the meeting, but he said he was still caught off guard. Kauffman said he decided to propose the idea of opening all county roads following a meeting with other Northern Michigan community leaders in Grayling. During the meeting, Kauffman said he did not hear any complaints from other leaders whose communities had similar ordinances to the one he proposed. Kauffman also noted the huge economic impact opening county roads to ORVs could have on the area. “There’s potential for Northeast Michigan to benefit,” Kauffman said.
