If HID lights can now come as standard on many new cars, they are rare on older cars. But an HID lights conversion kit can be an alternative to get that white light on older cars as well. From a safety perspective, they can be superior when driving during the night. In theory and in practice, installing these lights on the car should not be too complicated. Even if the lights are different from manufacturer to manufacturer, they still go through the following steps.

Change the standard lights with xenon lights

Changing the standard lights of the car is the first step. The old lights can be easily removed from the headlight assembly. Under the hood, each headlight assembly is located on the left and on the right side of the car. The two old stock bulbs are removed. When placing the new lights into position, it is recommended not to touch the bulb’s glass.

The xenon lights can then be inserted in the headlight housing. These steps need to be executed with attention and forcing the old lights out or the new lights in are not recommended.

Connect the HID ballast

The HID bulb ballast needs to be connected next. Each light bulb needs to be connected with the ballast and the HID ballast then back to the socket. Testing the lights is then recommended. This can be performed by normally turning the lights on to see if they work. If the lights are not working, it is recommended to flip the adapted before trying again.

A few considerations

Before installing the HID lights on an old car, regulation needs to be checked. Not all lights which are available with the HID kits on the market are actually road-legal. It means that they can be too strong for normal cars on the road. Fines are applicable in this case.

It is why car owners need to check the lumen of the chosen lights. Typical xenon lights can product around 3.000 lumens. This is considerably more than the 1.4000 lumens of halogen lights. Those unsure about the lumen legality in their state can check the issue with local authorities before purchasing the best HID bulbs. But the best Hid kit should be legal for the road.

Conclusion

Finding the best HID kits might not take too long as there are plenty of options to choose from. Installing these lights should not be too complicated either when following the steps above. However, a few precautions are needed. The lights need to abide by local and federal regulation. If they are within limits, they also need to be installed with care. The glass of the light bulbs should not come in contact with the fingers. The oil from the skin can damage it at high temperatures. If the glass comes in contact with the fingers, it is recommended to wipe it with alcohol before turning them on for the first time.
