The Importance of Gratitude

With Thanksgiving around the corner I would be amiss to not discuss the importance of gratitude in our psycho social health. A November 2011 Harvard publication called, “Praise Gratitude”, highlighted that people who are generally more grateful are also healthier and have better relationships with others. The publication took into account three different studies.  So here are my two questions:  Why and how do we cultivate gratitude in our own lives? Why does gratitude appear to bring health and wellbeing to those that express it and live it? Let us use an externalization of gratitude to help us identify a plausible answer. If gratitude was a person what would he or she be like? What would Gratitude’s interactions be like with society and visa-versa? Gratitude, would, I imagine smile a lot. If he/she would trip and fall he or she would smile at being able to stand up again, or at not breaking his/her arm. When encountering the death of a loved one Gratitude may be found sitting quietly remembering the laughs they were able to share, and how the friendship or interactions provided wisdom and experience for their view on life and other future interactions. Gratitude would be pleasant and patient when encountering life’s challenges by recalling past challenges that were overcome or endured. How would society interact with gratitude? I think there would be some that would enjoy his/her company. I think others would push it away and hang with Whiney and Mopey and Never happy. As we read the above description of Gratitude I see a person that is hopeful, gracious, self-aware, calming and a really good historian. How can we get to know this person?  Here are my suggestions: 1) Write a letter to 1 or a couple of people whom you are grateful for or whom you have shared an experience you are grateful for. 2) Make a collage of pictures from a magazine of what you are grateful for (great to do with kids-even teenagers). 3) Say a prayer and or meditate on what you have. Counter the “I wish” with “I am grateful”. 4) Count your blessings (literally). 5) Share this article with someone.
