Why Two (or more!) Monitors? A few years ago, I decided to make the move to two monitors. Why use multiple monitors? I had seen some of my customers with them in their business and we totally impressed with the experience – you can take windows and move them from one to the other just by sliding the window around. The extra screen space is awesome, and the ability to see so much at the same time means that I could save time by not having to minimize and maximize windows all the time. I have to say that my experience has been fantastic. Although the shelf above my desk limits me to two monitors, the two 23″ monitors I have now are a huge time saver when I work. I don’t think I could ever go back to just one monitor ever again, and although I still use my laptop, I do feel handicapped when I use it because of the single screen. Verify Your Computer Can Have Two Monitors: You will want to make sure your computer is capable of two monitors prior to purchasing a second one. Essentially you will look at where your current monitor plugs into the computer, and if you see another open video port (where a cable is not plugged in) such as a DVI, VGA, or HDMI (see Google for descriptions and pictures of those ports) your computer most likely can handle the second monitor. Then you will want to purchase your second monitor, knowing which port(s) are available on the computer. Verify the monitor has one of those port hookups available (note that many inexpensive monitors do not have an HDMI port for example) and that it either comes with that cable or you will need to purchase that cable. How To Hook Up Two Monitors: Unbox your new monitor and connect the power cable and the cable that will go to the computer. Plug in the power cable to the electricity and plug the data cable into your computer. The computer should immediately pick up the second monitor. You may need to go into the Video properties of your computer and select to extend the monitors (which means not using them as a clone of each other), then select which monitor you want to use for your main computer. If you cannot move your mouse smoothly left to right or vice-versa between the computers, you can move monitor 1 to the other side of monitor 2, then click “Apply.” Then the movement should work properly. ...read more
