How to Vacuum Carpets & Floors

Clean floors are essential to a clean and healthy home. Your family tracks in dirt, debris and germs that piles up on your floor. Your floors can also become dirty after you cook or work on messy projects. One of the easiest ways to clean carpets and floors is to use a vacuum cleaner on carpets and other types of flooring.

  1. Walk through the area you plan on cleaning and pick up large pieces or objects you won't want to be sucked up into the vacuum. Large pieces of debris can break your vacuum and your vacuum can cause damage to objects you won't want to throw away.

  2. Sweep the area next to the baseboard or wall. Many vacuums cannot reach this area so sweep out dirt to clean the area.

  3. Plug in the vacuum and turn it on. Start on the top floor of your home in the room that's furthest from the stairwell and work your way down. Shake out the rugs as you go and then vacuum over them.

  4. Move smaller furniture and vacuum underneath. Get help to move larger pieces of furniture.

  5. Use even, gliding streaks and start away from the door and work your way to the door in each room.

  6. Vacuum each room and then vacuum the hallway. After the hallway, use the vacuum attachments to clean the stairs and move to the downstairs, again starting in the room farthermost from the stairs and working your way to the front of the house using even, gliding motions with the vacuum.

  7. Empty the vacuum bag if it is full and replace the cord. Store the vacuum in a closet or pantry until you need it again.
