How to Scrape Barnacles Off a Propeller

Many boat owners have a problem with barnacles latching on to the hulls or the propeller of their boats. It is a colony of small sea creatures that will often block the drains or reduce the efficiency of the boat's engine. The barnacles should be removed as soon as possible.

How to Scrape Barnacles Off a Propeller

  1. Remove the boat from the water.

  2. Use a plastic putty knife to scrape the barnacles off the propeller blade of the boat. This should be done as soon as the boat is removed from the water, because the barnacles will be soft.

  3. If there is residue left behind after scraping, use a barnacle-removing chemical to remove the remainder of the creatures. The acid in the chemical will dissolve the remaining bits of barnacle.

  4. When the chemical starts to foam, put on some rubber gloves and scrub the propeller blades with a brush.

  5. Use soapy water to wash the chemicals off the propeller.
