How to Install Playground Mulch

Playgrounds are a place of creativity and freedom for children of all ages. When a child's energy level is increased, they think less about their surroundings. This leads to falls, bumps and bruises on the playground. Having a proper ground of soft mulch will provide added safety to children as they explore their imaginations.

What You'll Need:

  • Mulch

  • Rubber landscape timbers

  • Landscaping fabric

  1. Clean up the ground around the playground. Pick up any litter, stones, sticks or old mulch that may interfere with laying a new covering. Large items may be removed by hand, but it is best to use a rake or shovel for smaller debris.

  2. Purchase rubber landscape timbers to place around the perimeter of the playground. Unlike real wood, rubber timbers need very little maintenance. Lay the timbers around the playground. Each timber should be only a few inches above the ground. These rubber timbers will keep the mulch inside the playground area.

  3. Lay landscaping fabric on the ground under the playground area. This fabric can be purchased at any nursery or home improvement store. The landscaping fabric will prevent grass and weeds from growing in the mulch.

  4. Cover the entire playground area with the mulch. The mulch should be thick enough to provide a cushion. Read the manufacturer's instructions to know exactly how much mulch should be used, as this varies by brand. Most manufacturers recommend 12 to 16 inches of mulch. High traffic areas, such as under the swings or at the end of the slide, should have more mulch. Keep the mulch inside the rubber timber perimeter.

  5. Maintain the proper level of mulch by periodically raking it back into place. More mulch may be added over time if it is blown away or worn down. Always keep the depth at the correct amount for safety.
