How to Install Outboard Motors
Outboard motors are used for many types of boats. They are convenient because they can be removed from the boat easily and can also be easily adjusted and installed. It is important to install an outboard motor correctly to prevent it or the boat from becoming damaged.
- Purchase an outboard motor that is the appropriate size for your boat. Boats have motor limits. You can find the limit specifications in the owner's manual that came with the boat. The motor should not exceed the limits.
- Check the mounting brackets that are located on the boats transom. The mounting brackets hold the outboard motor in place. Make sure the brackets are high enough on the transom that they do not allow the outboard motor to drag on the ground when the boat in not in the water or allow it to drag in shallow water. You may need to adjust the brackets to achieve the desired motor height.
- Place the outboard motor on the mounting brackets and use the clamp bolts to hold it in place. Use your hands to tighten and adjust the clamps. The clamps should be tight enough to hold the motor in place, but lose enough to allow it to move from side to side.
- Use a bungee cord or lock to keep the motor tightly in place. Although the clamps are strong, after they have been in the same position for a long time, they can weaken the transom slip from the motor. The bungee cord or lock will help hold the motor onto the boat if the clamps slip. It can also help prevent the outboard motor from being stolen.
