How to Build Your Own Jon Boat Trailer

Jon boats have wide bottoms with a flat square shape, making these boats perfect for bird hunting or fishing. The boats are extremely light. To help get the boat to your fishing spot, a jon boat trailer is needed and easily made by hand.

Items Needed

  • Winch

  • Galvanized steel strips

  • Small Trailer LED lighting kit

  • Hitch ball receiver for trailer

  • Galvanized steel tubing

  • U-bolts

  • Galvanized steel bolts, nuts, and washers

  1. Find the length and width of your jon boat and add 4 feet to the length behind the motor. That number makes up the overall length of the trailer.

  2. Put two pieces of galvanized tubing that equate to the width of the mounting pad where the axel is. These make up the cross pieces and will hold the weight of the boat.

  3. Put two more pieces of tubing to add support above those pieces and attach to the spring mounts. All pieces need to be level.

  4. Put holes into the tub parts and bolt the beams to the mounts.

  5. Put the assembly into the trailer with 2 u-bolts on each beam.

  6. Put two pieces of wood on the beams and use brackets to shape to the boat. They need to be roughly 6 inches from the side of the boat. Put all weather padding to protect the hull, this will also make the boat easier to slide in and out of the trailer.

  7. Place the hubs onto the axels and tighten.

  8. Add the hitch ball in the front of the beam. Add the LED kit to the trailer as well.
