Baby Boomers Maintain Physical Fitness Even as They Age

http://www.homecareassistance.com/content/?c=86&p=1720 Currently there are approximately 483 million people over the age of 65 living in the world. By 2030, that number will jump to 974 million (about.com). With an increasing elderly population, an emphasis on fitness has become a priority for the majority of the population who will make up that 974 million, more specifically, the baby boomer generation. According to Babyboomer-Magazine.com, every 7 seconds another baby boomer turns 50. And as the aging continues, so does the focus on maintaining physical fitness. "USA Triathlon had 58,073 members in 2005. This year, it had 134,932, and, despite their advancing age, Boomers make up almost one-fourth of that membership — more than 32,000″ (AARP). A majority of the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon are Boomers as well. Values have changed since the 1950s when Boomers' parents were focused on providing for the family and maintaining a strong work ethic. Although these things are still important, the Baby Boomer generation brought about a shift in values, emphasizing health and fitness as avenues to excelling in life as well. Cycling, running, swimming, and hiking are just a few of the ways in which this generation is continuing to achieve great health. This passion for fitness is affecting our current generation as well, as more and more 20-year-olds are following in their parents' footsteps. Only positive things can come from staying fit! ...read more

Non-pharmacologic treatments (NPTs) and why they work

An article in the Huffington Post quoted "Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias" to be the greatest obstacle and social crisis of our century. It may very well seem so, since a family of four will spend up to $17,000 in one year on health care alone. Deemed a "massive social issue" by professor Martin Prince from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, senior citizens dealing with dementia can find assurance through non-pharmacologic treatments (NPTs) that side-step the harmful or lasting effects of pharmaceutical drugs. NPTs also employ skills training and occupational therapy-based strategies for families to help them prepare for the needs that come with dementia-related illness. Two leading examples of NPTs are Thomas Jefferson University's Jefferson Elder Care and New York University's Caregiver Intervention. Both stray from facility-based care and instead emphasize familial awareness and proven home care giving programs. As we ring in the New Year, let's keep in mind the significance of dementia awareness, family involvement and our stronger national systems that support these values.http://www.homecareassistance.com/content/?c=86&p=1692  ...read more

New GPS tracking device for elderly with Alzheimer's

Finally, there is good news for Alzheimer's sufferers.  A new technology – the GPS enabled I -TAG, promises to prevent Alzheimer's patients from getting lost, many of them who leave their residence and forget their way back home. The small GPS tracking device can even be used to track children or teenagers. But the main objective, where it is expected to have the largest impact, is the protection of senior citizens, who suffer from some form of dementia or Alzheimer's. The GPS tracking device also has additional features like live monitoring from any internet-enabled computer, geo-fencing to establish a perimeter, texts, email alerts and SOS call function. According to the company website, the GPS tracking device operates with a rechargeable battery, which lasts a week on an average. For institutions housing Alzheimer patients such as the Assisted Living Facilities, the geo-fence feature creates a safety net, giving them an option of leading a better quality of life with more independence, while, at the same time, offering them protection, reducing hassles for the caregiver. They can also log on any time to check their whereabouts or view a report of their daily activities. Additionally, the GPS enabled I-tag is equipped with an SOS button. Disoriented patients simply need to press the button which will send a message to the phone or emails of their closed ones, making them know where they are and whether they need help. Cancer patients that suffer from depression have 40% higher death rate

A recent analysis indicates that depression in those that are suffering from cancer can affect their likelihood of survival. This analysis is published in the peer-review journal of the American Cancer Society, entitled Cancer. A total of 9,417 patients were observed and 26 cases were found. According to the researchers, the death rates were 25% higher in those that were experiencing depressive symptoms and 39% higher in those that were diagnosed with depression, whether minor or major. While this research is good stepping stone, further studies must be conducted before reaching a concrete conclusion. This analysis was based on many different tumor types, so the next step would be to notice how depression affects the different types of cancers. There is no actual risk of death due to depression, but it is wise for healthcare professional to test for depression in cancer patients. ...read more
