Flood and Earthquake insurance, planning for an emergency

With all the news about the earthquakes in Haiti and Chili many are asking questions about their homeowner coverage. Most homeowner policies cover damage caused by: fire, wind, or theft. Additional coverage can be purchased for flood and earthquake damage, but are not part of your regular homeowner policy.   Planning for the worst and hoping for the best. Preparing for a disaster means having a plan. Before disaster strikes you should have the following in your plan: A common place to meet if you cannot meet at home; a supply of drinking water; non perishable foods; any medications; list of phone numbers: your family doctor, hospital, utility departments, etc.;, a battery powered radio, and don't forget about your pets; if time permits turn off gas, water, and electric before hand.   Also make sure your insurance is up to date. If you have updated your home: added a room, remodeled your kitchen, etc. make sure your insurance agent knows of your changes to properly replace your home.   Flood (rising water) insurance is administered by the Federal Government. There are two major factors that determine your flood premium; your flood zone, and your elevation certification.   Earthquake coverage may be added as an endorsement to your existing homeowner coverage. While we do not have many earthquakes in North Alabama, it is a possibility, and unless you have an earthquake endorsement on your policy you are not covered.
