Opal is a part of the south west region of Wyoming known for its cattle and abundance of minerals and precious stones. It is said the town's name, Opal, came from the hue of the rock in the surrounding mountains. Major attractions include the Fossil Country Frontier Museum and the J.C. Penney Homestead. Among the biggest companies in Opal are EPCO Inc. and Outlaw Supply. Opal is serviced by the Lincoln County School District. One of the best places to visit when you are in Opal is the J.C. Penney House railroad park.
