The power of HDMI

The days of worrying what cables you will need to hook up your home theater or flat screen HD tv are over. The HDMI ( High Definition Multimedia Interface) is there for you to install your equipment neatly and allow it to run more effiecient. With the HDMI cable, you can send the highest of quality audio, as well as 1080p HD video to your tv from your sources. Now there is no mess, which is something that I can not handle or tolerate when I am installing audio video equipment. The RGBVH cable was the older analog HD cable of the past. This was a five wire cable where the video came across the red green and blue wires, while the audio was pushed across the red and white wires. This cable still has its place in the HD world, but it's role is steadily diminishing because of the HDMI cable. It is also a more inexpensive cable than the HDMI, even though the HDMI cable will not break your a/v budget, and still gets the job done. With advances in technology comes with the need for advances in the cabling used. Telephone, data, and tv are slowly pushing over to fiber optics to run faster speeds over longer runs, sending more and more information across the cable. HDMI has had to advance as well due to the same problems of longer runs, and needing to maintain signal strength from point to point. They have developed a way now to use a single cat5e cable, or a cat6e cable to send HDMI greater distances without the drop off in signal. It is called an HDMI balun.  How it works is that it uses a small HDMI cable on one side coming out of a source, lets say the cable box. It plugs into one side of the balun and converts the data signal onto the cat5 cable. On the other side behind the tv, the cat5 cable is terminated onto another balun where the audio video signal is broken back out onto an HDMI cable and plugged into the tv. No signal is dropped due to the cat5 and you end up with crystal clear HD images and sounds on the other side.A drawback to the balun is the "handshaking" that is protocol with HDMI compatible devices. What happens is that when one HDMI source sends signals to another, everytime the data transmits into the next device it needs to see that it is legitimate and allows this to proceed. In some cheaper chip sets, the "handshaking" will tend to add a bit of delay with the audio synching up with the video. I have only seen this happen once or twice, but it can definately be frustrating when it does.Well I hope I have helped give you a little more insight to the HDMI cable, look back soon as I will continually be blogging about the HD world. ...read more
