Paper Nation: Works on Paper
Paper is a dynamic material. It has been used for centuries, and is used today in everything from industrial applications to art. The history of paper, and the constant evolution of paper’s form and use makes it exciting to see contemporary works with paper. While reviewing the images submitted for this show, the jurors were struck by several different aspects of what makes art interesting and how it can affect the viewer. Some of the work employed bold colors applied spontaneously with a bold hand. Other works were done with a delicate, deliberate touch, which seem to have been created with much thought and planning. All of the pieces evoke confidence within their chosen medium. Are you an artist who dares to step outside the box? by Renee Phillips
I found this question on LinkedLn posted by Renee Phillips, an Artist's Career Consultant, Author, Artist, and Director of Manhattan Arts International, www.ManhattanArts.com. Here is my response. I believe it is important that artists today go above and beyond their own limits. It is with this attitude and behavior that I have found success at the local level in my community. I have approached different aspects of being involved in the Visual Arts as an artist, educator, advocate, and leader. About two years ago, I have learned to take risks and see how things unfold with no preconceived notion. I have adapted this way of action into my life. We all know that taking risks can be positive or negative, I believe the results from these outcomes can be learned from and applied to whatever you have in mind. I founded a visual arts group called The Sheboygan Visual Artists, www.sheboyganvisualartists.com in 2007. What started as a group of 5 has blossomed to 200+. I believe SVA came to be at the right time and right place to fit the needs of today's artists. A big contributing factor was take a risk on an idea I knew could be worth taking regardless if SVA has 5 members or 500. It is this idea that I soon realized that in order to take risks one needs a support system, a listening soundboard for advice. For the past year, I have experience this new found success in art sales, new connections, and exposure both on the local and regional level. Also, this resulted in some achievements not necessarily tied to producing art, but to being a high school art educator. I was recently chosen to be the 2009 Outstanding Art Educator - Secondary Division for the State of Wisconsin and the 2009-2011 President-Elect for the Wisconsin Art Education Association. I view all of my art-related experiences as being cyclical. One way or another, they are all connected, as a result encourages me to continue to move "outside my comfort zone" and seek new adventures and experiences that I know will help me continue to do what I believe I am destined to do: to be passionate about the Visual Arts.
