Attracting Butterflies to Your Yard

When relaxing in your yard, I am sure you have come across the winged flowers of the air--butterflies!  Who doesn't love to watch these creatures as the flit from flower to flower in their winged dance?  These petals that fill our air are than just amazing to look at.  They perform an essential job in our ecosystem.  The winged insect beauties provide pollination for our garden plants.   One of the greatest threats to butterflies is the loss of and ever changing habitats.  As our urban areas grow and new development takes hold, butterflies lose their safe neighborhoods.  You can attract these breath-taking beauties to your garden and provide them the hospitality that they need to survive.  It is fairly easy, too.  All you need to do is incorporate some of their favorite plants into your garden.  Butterflies are attracted to Joe Pye Weed, black-eyed Susans, zinnias, coreopsis, fennel, butterfly bushes, phlox, anise hyssop, butterfly weed, asters, coneflowers, salvia, and verbena.  If you find that you don't have much garden room, you can still attract them by planting some of those plants into containers and placing them around your porch or pation.  You will also want to provide them with a source of water.  Place a shallow saucer of wet sand for them to drink from.  They will not drink from ponds or bird baths, as they are too deep for them.   By providing some simple plants and water, you will provide them with a haven to live in.  They in turn will delight you with their beauty and add to your garden with their pollination abilities. ...read more

Getting a Great Start to a Healthy Lawn

Healthy lawns are about more than just mowing them to look pretty.  A good lawn starts right as the forsythia trees bloom.  It is then that you want to put down your first lawn care treatment of the season. This is the perfect time to put down a fertilizer with a pre-emergent herbicide.  The pre-emergent herbicide will prevent the germination of weeds in your lawn.  These herbicides control annual weeds such as crab grass, chickweed, and dandelions by stopping the cell division in their young root systems.  If the root system can not develop, they young weed dies.  Timing is extremely important.  Pre-emergent herbicide must be applied prior to the weeds germinating.  A good rule of thumb is to apply this treatment as soon as the forsythia are in bloom. ...read more
