    Luxury Brand Marketing: Why it's so Successful | by Diane Nelson A recent post on the website Seeking Alpha reports in 2012 the luxury market is up 19 percent as a whole. The three reasons cited for the spike is Asia’s craving for luxury, a commitment to heritage and the savvy use of digital media according to the July 2, 2012 post “Coach and Ralph Lauren Taking the Right Steps.” It seems the affluent is a growing breed despite the weak economy and many major luxury brands are cashing in by way of social mediamarketing. It has been reported that 93% of affluent people still only use tradi tional media such as newspapers,magazines, TV and radio. To say this demographic is set in their way is an understatement; above all else, they expect a brand to be authentic. What sets luxury brands apart from mass-market brands is their quality and craftsmanship. Luxury brands are all about exclusivity. “Luxury marketing is all about the right product, the right package and the right channel,” says Rich Keller, Vice President of Marketing at Godiva Chocolate. Brands like Gucci, BMW and Cartier focus their marketing messages on the realm of consumer emotions. Mass-market brands tend to focus their marketing strategies almost exclusively on the real world and real world solutions. Marketing with a Purpose Marketing by nature is designed to create a “want.” Whether the brand is Gucci or Levi’s, the goal is to make consumers “want” the product. When luxury brands and mass-market brands are discussed, the difference is found within the nature of that desire. Luxury marketing summons a deep, quiet yearning that festers and grows until the consumer decides they must have that product. On the other hand, mass-market brands create a completely conscious and identifiable desire. Luxury brand marketing thrives on emotion and the consumer to be truly content) while the desire manufactured by Fantasy (never really allowing the consumer to be truly content) while the desire manufactured by mass-marketers is most effective when its intent is specifically geared toward consumer satisfaction; dependent on problem solving.                                                                                    Luxury brands strategically market through messages meant to make the consumer dream of a different world; a world in which they are more content, powerful and perhaps sexier. Dreams are emotive, completely illogical and based on circumstances and environments that do not really exist – inventive. The luxury brands are cashing in on fantasy and consumers are more than willing to pay the price. The continued growth and global appeal of social media marketing has widened the consumer reach and helped to prime the pump for increased spending on Luxury items.
