We at Craftsman Computer Services in Cudahy, WI. are seeing a LOT of spyware, malware, and viruses attacking our customers' computers lately. We decided it would be a good idea to give people some common sense tips on how to avoid having your desktop or laptop computer become slow or even shut down from these malicious programs. Check out the advice below that our technicians have come up with and see if these ideas can help YOU avoid a computer meltdown! 1) There's No Free Lunch. If a site promises anything such as music, movies, operating systems, etc. for free, be on the alert. Downloading copyrighted music or movies is not only illegal, but it can infect your computer with malware faster than you can say, "Oops!" (this is a family friendly blog, folks, so we cannot print what you REALLY say!). You should only get coupons from Internet sites associated with companies you know. If you are downloading freeware, get it from a clean and trusted site such as www.filehippo.com. Finally, if you get free software, be careful to avoid toolbars that are offered to you (see tip #2). 2) Beware of Toolbars. If you venture on the Internet either a little or a lot, you probably have been offered toolbars. These may seem to foster convenience for you, but they also can become conduits for 3rd party entities to deliver adware, spyware, or viruses to your computer or at least slow down your machine with pop up ads. The way toolbars are offered can be pretty tricky, as well. When a software download asks you if you want to get a toolbar, you have a chance to uncheck 1 or more toolbars--but you may have to uncheck these offers from the bottom of the list up so that some of the toolbars are not grayed out. Do your best to uninstall toolbars you may have already gotten or else avoid getting them in the first place. 3) Avoid Naughty Sites. Adults are free to visit Internet sites that are legal, but it doesn't mean you won't pick up some sort of malware infection in the process. Rule of thumb: if you woudn't be comfortable with your mother looking over your shoulder while you browse the Internet, you might want to re-think those sites in an effort to keep your computer clean. 4) Get Rich Quick--NOT! If you haven't heard about common scams that can reach you via e-mail, you probably just traveled by time machine from the 1800's. Beware of any of the following: any e-mail promising monetary gain (especially written in bad English or from someone in Nigeria), any e-mail from someone you don't know, or an e-mail from someone you do know but with limited text and a link to click on. You could become a victim of a traditional scam if you share any personal information or financial account numbers as well as have your computer gummed up with adware. Oh, don't forget that new high tech devices can become infected, so never click on these items with your tablet or smart phone--or you will feel REALLY dumb... 5) You Get What You Pay For. As mentioned in tip #1, nothing is free. If you need to get your computer cleaned or fixed, beware of any techie who tells you that he/she got a free or low cost deal for you on your operating system (Windows or Apple). It may work for a while, but once Microsoft or Apple detect you are running an illegal copy of the operating system, you computer will simply quit working. Do not seek or accept pirated versions of paid software that violate copyright or may stop working on you and leave you with no valid license. Finally, if your computer shuts down due to virus/malware infection or other problem, seek a legitimate computer repair shop that doesn't charge you an arm and a leg. Our Craftsman Computer Services repair shop in Cudahy, WI. is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, and you can check out our BBB report. We invite those of you who live in the Milwakuee area to contact us if your computer is "acting up" on you. If you don't live in the Milwaukee area, be as wary about fly-by-night technicians as you would the adware and scams discussed above.
