Tips for creating a great website.

Did you start out setting up a website just to have a presence on the web? Then you heard about search engine optimization (SEO). An SEO company says you're doing it all wrong. The conflicting information makes it hard to know where to start. Here are some of the things I have discovered since 2007. They aren't really big things, but they can change your site from a mere information site to one that increases your income. Focus on topics not keywords.Google's been using latent semantic indexing (LSI) for years, and it continues to improve at it. If you focus on content about who you are, what you do and what you sell, keywords fall into place. AdWords may still focus on specific keyword strings, however organic search focuses on what Google thinks your prospect is actually searching for. Use long-tail keywords(when you do use them).Long-tail is just computerese for phrases. Competition for "ghostwriter" for example is very stiff. It will take years to build a presence that lands on Google's first page, if ever! But "article ghostwriter" may have a better chance because there is less competition. Expect visitors to enter your site on any page.Build your site with more than one "landing page." Each page can hyperlink to the same internal information, but the search terms that you optimize for can be different for each "landing page." You increase your chances of making the top 10 in the search engine. Add a blog. It's a great way to build credibility in the marketplace. Don't just spout off about the weather. Include solid content about your industry. Don't crowd the page with too much information. Make it easy for people to see what the page is about. Stick to one topic per pageor at least build hyperlinks that connect the parts of the page together easily. Include some kind of call to actionabove the bottom of the screen. Don't expect people to scroll down. Most won't. Typical calls to action include "Contact Us" or "Read This Free Report" type links. The idea is to generate interaction between you and the customer. Provide content that answers the needs of your customers. You don't have to twist someone's arm to convince him/her that he/she can't live without your product or service, but you can increase his/her awareness that your product or service would reduce the discomfort in his/her life. Your goal is to build a relationship with your customer that demonstrates that you care about what he/she needs. Be prepared to stand behind what you say.A great website is only as good as the company behind it. Let people down and that same web that you hoped would build your business will tear it down. The first thing I do when I hear of a new product or service is search the web for negative comments. You can expect most of your customers are doing the same. Digg and Twitter are active hot spots for building and tearing businesses down. Watch that grammar and spelling. The first impression many of your customers get of your company is your website. Perfect grammar is attainable whether you are writing for a 5th grade reading level or college grad. Write for 5th graders. As the TV show demonstrated, they are smarter than most of us realize, so you don't have to worry that your copy is going to be dull or boring. Your goal is to make the site easy to read. Follow these tips and your site will have more punch and promote your goals more effectively. If doing all of this sounds overwhelming, check my services athttp://writingmyownbook.com. I would love to help you enjoy all the business-boosting effects your website can provide. ...read more
