Lanes Landing

First off, our deposit was extremely high (due to poor credit). It was $4500, and our rent was $875 per month. Bill and Debra Keppler are not the worst landlords ever, but are far from being decent people. Debra is the worst, she told me one time that poor people have to pay more because they are poor. People with bad or no credit might have to pay more of a deposit, but charging to different amounts to people because someone has less diposable income doesn't mean they need to pay more. Also another renter told me that Debra used her race as a way to insult her. As in, she was moving out and Debra wanted a lot of money and when the renter said no (because there was no reason for it), Debra said, oh well I should expect that from your kind of people, referring to the renters race. I've know dozens of people that rented there, and each one on moving out has been charge $1000+ and had their deposits kept. While living their they would ask me for odd favors like to drop off eviction notices to other renters ( I didn't want to say no, out of fear). They told me not to do laundry after 6pm, even though in our contract it said 10pm. They would call to tell us to be quiet (because of chopping veggies), because our psycho downstairs neighbor would call them. We walked on eggshells for 6 years and hated everyday of it. They even sent out letters to all tenants letting them know who owed them money and how much it was. I'm sure that is illegal and if it isn't then it is just gross. That was to make the current tenants scared to "screw up"(moving out). Moving out was the best thing I've ever done. We rent a large house now for just a few hundred more that what we were paying for that tiny two bedroom. Upon moving out I was charged for 40 hours of wall cleaning, since my contract stated that after 18 month getting the walls painted would be free. Also I was charged in full for the carpets to get replaced. The carpets were 5+ years old when we moved in and we were there for 6 years. So he told me the carpet cleaner guy said the water was coming out grey blue, and that it was my fault. The color was due to the carpet pads being so old. Just everything they did as landlords was either weird or screwed up. I would never let a friend or family member of mine rent from them ever. I hope they lose $3000 worth of business because of this review, since that is what they charged me to have "walls cleaned" and carpets replaced. If you see them, RUN! ...read more
