I have been taking one-hour private lessons via Skype, either weekly or bi-weekly, from Arturo for the last six months. These lessons have been excellent. Here’s why: Arturo is both an encouraging and an exacting teacher. That is, while he notices and applauds any advancement you make, he also notices the mistakes, (which he points out in a kind way). This is a good combination if you want to make progress with your drumming. I play the djembe and mostly West African rhythms, not Arturo’s style of playing at all, but because of his emphasis on basic good drumming techniques, I find the lessons extremely worthwhile. Every hour long lesson is an action packed 60 minutes of instruction with no wasted time. Arturo is very accommodating to the vagaries of my schedule. There is no problem if I have to change a time or date. While there are some disadvantages to Skype (sound quality is not great; image sometimes can be a little blurry; overall it is more pleasant to actually be with someone instead of via a screen), these lessons have still been wonderful and Skype is the only way to make it happen since I don’t live in Seattle. Additionally, since there is no time spent driving, a lesson is easy to fit into my schedule. ...read more

I've been taking the group lessons on Saturdays for the last month. I found the ad in an event calendar and even though I had not been interested in hand drumming I thought I would maybe try a class. This is a group beginner session and I felt welcome joining (even though I was starting a bit late). It has been a bit of a challenge for me to keep up because of the late start, but Arturo is very helpful and the design of the class is interactive and I feel I am progressing quickly. I was not interested in group lessons, but that is the thing I enjoy most about the classes. Also, the music offered is not what I was originally interested in playing, but I plan to continue lessons. I think anyone interested in learning different drumming style, basic rhythms or just wanting to try something unique would benefit from these classes. I have really enjoyed them so far. ...read more

Brian R Suder’s Music Technician Start Academy and Internship

Brian R Suder was born and raised in Seattle, WA. He attended “The Meter School for the Arts” and received a degree as a music technician. Brian utilizes an electronic console to produce his music. Brian began his career as a Broadcast engineer at the renowned Bindy Group in 2002. As he became more seasoned and with the knowledge that The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that his industry was growing 25%, Brian opened a new enterprise called Rock Start. It was created to help new music technicians enter the field. These new engineers are trained in the areas of video, film and sound recording. These music technicians use electronic equipment to mix, synchronize, record and reproduce music for stage, film, sound recordings, radio, TV and CD-ROMs. The music can be a live concert, background for a movie, a motivator in a video game or part of an instructional lesson on a CD-ROM, to name just a few end products. The technician sets up and fixes the recording equipment including microphones, and monitors the music volume and quality during recording. Brian Suder’s teamofmusic technicians work in studios, sports arenas, concert venues and even at a movie and video studios. His top team travels to set locations for movies. Music technicians who begin their careers at Rock Start may work 40 hours per week for a movie studio or on a freelance basis for a recording studio. Hours may be very long for freelance jobs, and a music technician may be on-call 24/7 to fix equipment and sound problems. This is no Monday through Friday work week, as recording studio time is hard to get and extremely expensive. A music technician may find himself working on a job in the middle of the night if that is the only time the studio is available. Brian Suder requires that hismusic technicians usually attend a 2-year technical school where they learn to use recording equipment. Courses in electronics, television production, computers and shop provide a solid foundation. ...read more
