Whale Watching in the Salish Sea
Our weather on the water was fantastic today, with sunny skies and flat calm seas. We traveled south in Rosario Strait where we saw some harbor porpoise and quite a few harbor seals hauled out on the rocks. We got word of orcas heading north along San Juan Island. We first spotted L89 Solstice, and L79 Skana, doing some fishing. We then saw L85 Mystery, and L55 Nugget with some of her family. The whales were spread out over many miles, and we got to visit with LPod for most of the day. One large group of whales was a blast to watch, as they became quite surface active. We saw some tail-lobs and cartwheels, and one whale breached twice pretty close to the boat! All of a sudden this big group started to porpoise, moving really fast. You could see just the tip of one dorsal fin cruising at about 15+ knots! Moms and calfs alike were just flying through the water! They slowed up at Henry Island and our guests witnessed them swim next to a beautiful section of the island. As we left, a mature bald eagle was watching us as it preened in a tree nearby. We took a different route home, and enjoyed the beauty of the San Juan Islands up close. September has been awesome, get on out here soon, as our mid-week trips will end next week! -Michael Colahan ...read more

WHALES! WHALES! WHALES!
The island explorer 3 has seen whales on 122 tours in a row. This is an Island adventures record and to our knowledge an all time industry record in our area. K-Pod had a new calf about 3 weeks ago. K44 is a male and appears to be happy and healthy. He has made an appearance on many of our tours in the last couple weeks. All 3 resident pods of Orcas are in the area ( about 90 killer whales). The whale activity doesn't just stop with the killer whales, we have seen transient killer whales, Humpbacks, and the Minkes have been nothing short of spectacular in the last 3 weeks. The stellar sea lions have stayed in the area longer this season than ever before. We are still seeing them on most tours. The harbor seals are starting to ween off their pups, so we are getting great pinnepeads action on our whale watching tours. Also joining the action is the harbor porpoises. We have seen them on nearly every tour. It's not uncommon this time of year to see hundreds of porpoises traveling together. August and September provides some of the best whale watching tours all year. ...read more

20 Breaches in a Row........
Tuesday, July 12, 2011 20 breaches in a row (from one whale)!!! Today, our trip took us north up toward Canada. On Orcas Island, we saw three mature bald eagles in a row. One even took flight! We continued north and found some K pod and J pod whales swimming south down Saturna Island. Within just a couple of minutes of arriving on scene, we had one whale breach for us 20 times! It was amazing! But the breaching didn't stop there, the activity was contagious, as the whale breached, spyhopped, tail lobbed, foraged and played around. We were able to identify Lobo, Lea and K42 from K pod and Mike, Slick and Alki from J pod. After a fun-filled, action packed hour, we had to head back toward our dock. On our way back, we stopped by Barnes Island and found a couple more mature bald eagles as well as some pigeon guillemots and black oystercatchers. We saw many harbor porpoise on our trip back as well! It was such a beautiful afternoon spent in Canada with the whales, sunshine and flat calm waters! ...read more
