Home Air Conditioner Noise

Sound-Reducing Technologies You Can’t Afford To Ignore As far as you’re concerned, if A/C noise is high around your own home — or that of a neighbor — winter may be bliss. Your air conditioner is not only out of sight; it’s out of mind. But with summer, it may be out of sight and top of mind because of constant A/C noise. So is this the price you pay for comfort or is there something you can do to literally muffle the commotion? The answer depends on several factors, beginning with the age of your A/C system. If yours is about 10 years old or older, it probably does make more noise than today’s quieter, more efficient systems. All the talk about refinements and improvements in “green” technology are largely true, at least when it comes to air conditioners. This is why if you’re experiencing problems with your aging compressor – the real workhorse of A/C systems – it may be cheaper in the long run toinvest in a new system. Do the math, or work with your HVAC contractor, to figure out how long it will take for you to recoup your investment, but recoup it you will. Compressors are generally the real noise makers of A/C systems, but if your fan blades are coated with dirt, they could be making noise that will disappear with a good cleaning.Call Terrell E. Moseleyto make an appointment, because this is one relatively simple fix that can quiet your A/C in no time. There are two other ways to quiet A/C noise, including: Building a fence around your A/C.Before you do, test the effect by propping pieces of plywood around it. If you’re satisfied with the noise reduction, the fence boards should be at least 3 feet away from the unit and overlapped. Wrapping a sound blanket around the compressor, though this measure won’t do as much good if your A/C is 10 years old or older. Sound blankets are relatively simple to install, and most result in a noise reduction of between 30 and 50 percent. Don’t forget that the A/C experts atTerrell E. Moseley, serving homeowners in greater Lynchburg, are here to help. Like you, we love the comfort that A/Cs provide, especially if there’s little by way of A/C noise. Passive Solar

Designing A Home That Minimizes Summer Heat And Maximizes Winter Warmth If you are building a new home, you should consider a design that will allow you to make use of passive solar energy. This type of solar energy works without having to install any mechanical or electrical fans or pumps in order to heat or cool your home. Instead, your windows, floors and walls are designed to collect, store and then distribute heat during the cooler months. During the summer months, heat is repelled from your home. When designing a passive solar heating and cooling system, there are five design elements to incorporate into your home in order to make full use of the system, according toEnergy Savers. These elements include: Aperture— A large window facing south, clear of trees or other buildings that would either shade the house or block the rays of the sun Absorber– A dark wall or floor that absorbs the incoming sunlight from the aperture Thermal mass– An object or material that acts as a layer of insulation behind the absorber to hold the heat produced from the sunlight Distribution– A circulation system that takes and distributes the heat from the storage and collection areas throughout the home Control– A means to limit the amount of sun that can enter the home during the hotter months, such as an awning or shade that restricts the circulation of heat With a passive solar system, you will reduce the energy costs incurred from heating and cooling your home. And this system will increase the value of your home, while reducing your home’s carbon footprint. For expert information about designing a passive solar home or retrofitting your existing home, contact Terrell E. Moseleytoday.
