We hired Brooks Construction based on a colleague's recommendation. Big mistake. Our renovation project, which took twice as long as the owner, Tyler Brooks, promised us, was stressful from beginning to end. He bills on a time and materials basis and it's hard to get a proper estimate out of him. If you change the scope of anything, he considers the estimate to be thrown out the window. He does not properly advise you of potential costs as you go along and find problems that need to be addressed or think of better or different ways to do things. I guess he just assumes if you have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on a reno project, an extra thousand or two is no sweat. On top of that, the work was not done well. Corners where new drywall was done aren't straight. Drywall repairs are visible (his drywall guy did the worst job we've ever seen, and we've renovated several rooms in our old house). Fixtures weren't level when installed and had to be shimmed or redone in several areas. His crew was sloppy and wasn't careful with new or old materials, and some items were damaged. Mr. Brooks himself was rarely on site, but when told by phone about a problem we'd found, he almost always immediately tried to say it wasn't their fault and that he either wouldn't fix it or would charge us to fix it -- before I was even done telling him what was wrong! (Every single time, it turned out that it WAS their fault and they did fix it, but not without Mr. Brooks complaining about it. UNREAL.) I've been doing home renovation projects, some of them myself, for over 20 years. I have never worked with someone so unprofessional. His crew wasn't up to the job but they were at least easy to work with and I felt they were honest. But I still would never hire this company again or recommend them. ...read more
