GET READY TO GARDEN

Time to get ready to garden.  Here in Utah we didn't really have a winter.  Been cold but not much snow.  Last year we  built a new greenhouse.  It's going to be fabulous.  This year I hope to have some amazing things growing.  It is set up to have classes in there.  I will be teaching a number of classes this year.  I regularly teach classes at the Riverton Home Depot.  Every Saturday morning if you can't make it to the Wednesday classes at the greenhouse. The first step to a great garden is to choose what you would like to plant.  Do you want to start them indoors or wait until you can plant them from seed.  I have picked what I am going to plant right away.  I sent for some Russian tomato seeds.  This particular variety is from Siberia.  They are naturally made to survive cooler temperatures, both in the spring as well as fall.  This will be the first year I have tried them, but I look forward to it.  I am going to do some other heirloom tomatoes as well, just haven't picked them out yet. Many people try soils from their garden outside.  Big mistake!!!!  I use a mixture that I make myself, peat moss, compost and vermiculite.  Very light, something that is easy for the seeds to pop through.  Much like Mel's mix.  Another mistake people make is putting the seeds in a dry soil.  I mix my soil together with water until it's very moist.  Not soaked. When you plant them remember the seeds and soil need to be covered and put in a warm place. At lease 72 degrees.  The seeds should pop up in a few days.  When they do come up and are 1 or 2 inches high take the cover off.  I use a sprayer to water them.  Just spritz them and they will be good.  A complete description of how to make your own seed germination garden is on my web site. www.athomeinthegarden.com   ...read more

How to build a Koi pond

Skimmers and bottom drains are not necessary but they exist for a reason, they both do a ton of work. Skimming junk off the top of the pond sure makes it a lot easier to see your fish. Bottom drains sure remove a ton of waste that you would need to scrape out several time a year if you want healthy fish and clean water. these two items you will eventually want it is a lot easier to install them now. But many people survive without either. When you go to buy Liner, buy a high quality liner 45mil EPDM. I suggest that you wait until your the hole for your beautiful is dug before buying this item. What you thought when you started this project may not be the same at the end. Having a one piece liner for your pond will make life much more enjoyable. The two biggest mistakes are buying cheap PVC liner it is not strong and tears easily, and buying a liner too small and trying to patch it. After several hours of digging you have reached the end hopefully you decided to make the edges square this will prevent raccoons from wading in your koi pond and eating all your fish. If you want some plants along the edges build a lip. Creating this will do a couple of things for you, it will provide a nice finished edge that can be filled tons of marginals that the fish will not be able destroy or uproot.  If you really want to have plants in the koi pond you can cut in a few shelves the top of the shelf should be at least 12" below the finished edge. The pond is dug, If you decided to do the bottom drains and skimmer now you should plumb these bottom drain into skimmer. Skimmer to filter, waterfall to stream. The object is to circulate water bottom drains should be  placed so they can collect the most junk, as the water returns to the pond you want it to create a circling motion. ...read more
