Working with so many female clients I am very familiar with the strong feelings many have for their favorite guilty pleasure! Throw chocolate, cookies, and everything else aside (unless it accompanies a Diet Soda)! This beverage will cover any craving! I have been one of Diet Coke’s biggest fans, so I know all too well how this works. I have heard all of the justifications. I know them first hand. It’s my only vice, it has ZERO calories, of all of the treats I could have this is not that bad, and so on…Here is the truth about Diet Soda, and I know how easy it is to blow this off, but I urge you to read on! If you can get off of this stuff, you are going to feel SO much better! If it is caffeinated, it’s incredibly addictive. If you don’t believe me, try going off of it and see how hard it is to resist. It will weigh on your mind…especially when you drive by McDonald’s or any convenience store. Go out to dinner and it’s a must! If you last a few days, you will no doubt be dealing with a throbbing headache. Oh wait, you have tried to stop before and you weren’t successful! You’ve probably tried numerous times. I have made my point. Remember, caffeine stresses your adrenal glands. Those glands are key for regulating your blood sugar and cortisol. It also regulates aldosterone, which controls fat metabolism. Contrary to what you may believe, caffeine is constantly depleting you of your energy reserves. Basically, drinking your caffeinated beverage (this includes tea and coffee) is killing your metabolism. The irony here is that we have no true evidence that diet soda or artificial sweeteners are actually helpful for people trying to “lose weight.” In fact, some research has linked weight gain and diet soda consumption. Part of the problem is we are confusing our brain because our brain thinks we are eating something sweet, so it is expecting calories. However, no calories come. Essentially, you are priming the brain to eat more. In the long run it could be stimulating your appetite! Artificial sweeteners are sweet, in fact Splenda, is 600 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar)!! This keeps your preference for sweets on the high side. The other problem, because it’s “diet,” we give ourselves the “free” card to drink as much as we want. Haylie Pomroy, celebrity nutritionist, encourages her clients to avoid diet foods of any kind! Her motto is, “If it’s fake, take a break.” If it says “Diet Something” or “Fat- Free Something,” put it back and step away from the shelf. These things are like poison for your body and your metabolism. About 10% of soda flavors contain BVO, or brominated vegetable oil, which is banned by the World Health Organization and 100 countries! Here is my challenge for you: STOP. Stop drinking diet soda right now for 4 weeks! You can do anything for 4 weeks. The first few days will be the hardest, but after that you will look back and wonder how you ever justified drinking it! Here is how you do it: 1. Be prepared to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. You will be amazed at how great you feel and how beautiful your skin will look! Drinking all of that soda was effecting your hydration and you’re about to experience just how awesome it feels to make up for that deficit! 2. If you are experiencing withdrawals, try adding cinnamon to your diet. Also, Gingko-Biloba is a great herbal remedy to help with those throbbing headaches. Most importantly, be patient because you are going to feel like a new person in a few days! 3. If diet soda has been your go-to, you need something in its place besides water. I love various non-caffeinated, herbal teas from Teavana. It’s worth spending the money to get a few bags of tea as well as a tumbler. This will save you when those cravings hit! If you must have a sweetener, use a natural one like Stevia. I love to add a little almond milk as well. Because it’s hot, get fruit flavored teas and refrigerate them so you have a nice cold, refreshing drink that you can flavor with fresh mint or basil! My favorite flavor right now is Youthberry & Wild Orange Blossom, but there are so many from which to choose! I also love La Croix sparkling water (my favorites are coconut and grapefruit flavor). Mineral water is so good for you for various reasons so drink up! Squeeze lemon and lime liberally into your water or mineral water, and try adding just a splash of organic cherry or pomegranate juice to make it even more appealing! Trust me, I realize you are tied to this emotionally and physiologically, so breaking free of it is going to be tough! It can be done, and it’s one relationship you are NOT going to miss!
