A comment on Visitability

Visitability Vision - We imagine Utah as a state with a vibrant housing sector that constructs attractive, affordable, accessible and sustainable housing to meet the needs of all Utahans. We imagine housing that supports vibrant, socially inclusive communities that are livable at all stages of life. Visitability is a movement, as well as a policy and technical strategy, to change home construction practices so that virtually all new single family homes offer a few specific features that make the home easier for people with mobility impairments to both live in and to visit. The three essential Visitability features are a no-step entry, wider doorways, and a larger main floor bathroom. It is important to make homes visitable in order to prevent isolation/depression, to facilitate earlier discharged from hospital, and to decrease premature or unnecessary personal care home placement. These features would also decrease caregiver workloads and decrease falls within our growing senior population. At Central Utah Center for Independent Living (CUCIL), we are working to bring together key people, create dialogue, share and collect information to promote this vision. We like to include senior groups, disability groups, housing services, government officials, real estate, interior design, architects, builders, and city planning professionals. The goal of the project is to discover where Visitability initiatives are taking place, and to identify what factors facilitate the movement's growth and what factors create barriers to Visitability implementations. For further information please feel free to contact Cristina Pitts at 801.373.5077 Ext. 208 ...read more
