Our daughter was bitten and scratched on several occasions (more than 5) in a matter of weeks by an aggressive child at this daycare. They reported a few incidents to us and we had to report a few to them as well that were not observed by the staff. She was one of several children that were attacked by this child according to staff. They refused to terminate the child's enrollment and the owner took offense to the fact that we did not find that acceptable. The owner acted very unprofessionally and threatened me by saying that she would get her husband to "handle me". She has no business running a daycare. We were told not to put our child here but chose to anyways due to the low price. That was a HUGE mistake. Please take our advice and pay a few extra dollars to have your child taken care of by a facility that responds to violence in an appropriate and professional manner. The aggressive child was suspended for a half day but two other incidents happened after that and were more severe. Today was the last straw in a string of incidents, including: wet, soaked diapers when we picked her up on several occasions, classrooms over child to teacher ratio, classrooms that smelled like old urine, no reinforcement with potty training (she was already wearing panties at her other daycare and not having accidents all day). We never knew who her teacher was. They had different staff in there daily. It wasn't until the last couple of weeks that we saw the same teacher consistently. The only reason we enrolled her at this facility was because our other daycare closed down due to budget issues and it was right down the street. Big mistake. You get what you pay for. We were already in the process of moving my daughter to a different child care center so it was only a matter of days until we were no longer taking her there. We feel saddened that we believed in this facility to handle the multiple attacks in a responsible manner and they chose to sit back and do nothing until forced. My daughter had to suffer and I hate to know that. While biting may be "common", it still needs to be addressed in a timely and responsible manner. Only after we made it an issue was it dealt with. There were no plans to remove the child from this facility until we pushed for it. How many more children needed to be bitten more than 3 times for something to happen? The owner could not accept the fact that she couldn't make the correct decision with the other child and only after I asked for an apology for her calling me "rude" and threatening to have her husband "handle me" did she ask for my child to be withdrawn, not me. I was not enrolled there. It's sad that she would punish my child and act in a hostile manner in front of her. ...read more

The Childrens Center of Stone Oak

I contacted the Children's Center of Stone Oak to find out a bit more information about their fees and schedules and to get a few details about their curriculum. I spoke with Anna, and we had a discussion about their policy regarding fees while our child is absent. I asked a question about the logic of it for clarification purposes, and she said "I've said everything I have to say; there is nothing more that I have to tell you, and I am very busy". She abruptly hung up on me without so much as a goodbye. I'm glad I called; I would not want to send my child to a place where, if this is how the staff treats the parents, I can only imagine how they would treat my child. ...read more

Is your Child a Picky Eater?

PICKY EATER STRATEGY While we all understand the importance of good nutrition during early childhood, a few of us are blessed with extraordinarily picky eaters. What's a parent to do?   Children who attend preschool are better served when their parents pack their lunches. Why? Because the process of choosing, packing and providing healthy meal choices is in the hands of parents; not a caterer or packaged meal plan provider. This is especially important if your child is a picky eater.   The Strategy: Let your child be a part of a healthy food conversation. Discuss the week's menus and the specific ingredients. Read cookbooks and magazines – or just look at the interesting pictures. Engage your child while at the food store and give them choices. For example, "Let's pick a fruit to pack in your lunches. Would you like to bring strawberries or apples?" Add a little sous chef to your dinner preparations. Ask your children to bring two lemons to you or put them in charge of stirring cold items. This may delay dinner, but consider the reward - quality time! It is normal for toddlers and young children to be picky eaters. They may refuse food based on its texture or color - do not fret, keep trying!   Parent Tips: Offer new foods on multiple occasions. Many children need to try a new food up to a dozen times before they like it. Set a good example and try new foods yourself. Encourage healthy food portions. Never insist that children "clean their plates." Rewarding a clean plate may lead to a distorted idea of food, such as ignoring feeling full or eating for a reward. Make healthy snacks available. Make fruits or veggies convenient to your child. Encourage your children to serve and feed themselves. Independence boosts self-esteem which leads to better food choices. Make ‘dining out' a special occasion – even if it's at the local burger joint. Children can practice manners and food choices in any dining experience.   Reward children with praise, hugs and kisses. Resist rewarding children's good behavior with sugary treats.   ...read more
