I owned a 95 Toyota Tacoma. I was rear-ended by another driver and it caused me to be pushed into the driver in front of me. I was in NC. I only had vehicle damage no liability or bodily injury. I was not the at-fault driver and the other driver’s insurance is paying. I chose to use USAA as a pass thru in negotiating because I thought they would advocate for my best interest. I went to have my car evaluated by the “USAA preferred vendor.” I was then given around $4600 to fix my car. I could not get my car fixed in NC so I waited until I got back to Florida to have my car fixed. Once in Florida, I took my car to another “USAA preferred vendor.” Instead of just fixing the car with the money, they reevaluated my car in the system. The difference in dollar amounts which was only a difference in sales tax causes it to be classified as “totaled.” USAA failed to inform me of the change in status. They took the money they had given me back out of my account as I bank with them as well. I fought for 3 months to have this changed but USAA was unwilling to negotiate. Now here we are 3 months later and I am still driving my truck which runs great, it just has the body damage. During the total process the USAA has been completely unwilling to negotiate even down to the 800 dollar tires that I bought 10 days before the accident. They will only give me about 25% of the value. I have been a long time customer. I have had a car comprehensively “totaled” in the past with them. Previously they had been very communicative and worked with me on that vehicle. It seems that in the past few years USAA customer quality has declined severely.
