“Don’t wait until the frustration is unbearable” According to research done by the National Institutes of Health, 1 out of 5 American children is affected by dyslexia. Sadly, most of these children go undiagnosed and have to suffer for years in school and not knowing why. What is dyslexia? The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) defines dyslexia as “a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate or fluent word recognition.” Dyslexia is not a VISUAL problem, but rather a linguistic problem. It affects people from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Males and females are affected nearly equally. Contrary to what many people think,dyslexia has NOTHING to do with intelligence. Many dyslexic individuals are bright, creative and out-of-the-box thinkers that just struggle to read and spell. 1)Renowned dyslexia expert Dr. Sally Shaywitz says, “The earliest clues involve mostly spoken language. The very FIRST clue to a language (and reading) problem may be delayed language. A seemingly innocent speech delay may be an early warning sign for a future reading difficulty—especially if there is a history of dyslexia in the family.” Once your child begins to speak, look for the following signs: 2) 2)Difficulty with pronunciation. By five or six years of age, a child should have little difficulty saying age appropriate words. 3) 3)Difficulty with nursery rhymes. 3 and 4 year olds love the repeated sounds in nursery rhymes. Dyslexic children are less sensitive to rhyming. A child’s familiarity with nursery rhymes turns out to be a strong indicator of reading success. 4) 4)Struggles to find the right words. It is important to note that dyslexia is an expressive language problem, NOT a thinking problem. 5) 5)Difficulty learning the alphabet. Dyslexic children can’t associate the funny squiggles called letters with their names and sounds. This is the beginning of reading. By the time a child enters Kindergarten they should know most, if not all, of the upper- and lower-case letters. While it is true that dyslexic children have difficulty attaching appropriate names to letters and words, there is no evidence to show that theyseeletters or words backwards. Dyslexic children have trouble naming, but not copying letters. 6) 6)Confusion between left and right, trouble learning to tie shoelaces, and clumsiness are all often associated with dyslexia. 7) 7)Family history of reading problems. Dyslexia is carried as a genetic trait, and one of the biggest warning signs is having a family member who has difficulty reading and spelling. For dyslexic children, the process of learning to read and becoming a skilled reader is painfully slow. The transition requires the child to focus on the internal details of the word, on the specific letters that make up the word and the sounds they represent. Because dyslexic readers understand the meaning of a sentence without fully decoding each word, they do not store the spelling of those words in their memory. The next time they see the word, it’s like they have never seen it before. While most children with reading problems are not tested until 3rd grade in most public schools, the best time to identify and help a child is during the first years of school. These warning signs can all be recognized as early as Kindergarten. Do not wait for them to “grow out of it”, and do not attribute this difficulty to “laziness”, "immaturity" or “lack of intelligence”. It breaks my heart to see that children with dyslexia are often incredibly smart…but they feel stupid. It is so frustrating to know that you are gifted in many things, but not understand why reading and spelling is so difficult. What is Business Continuity? Simply, it is the planning, processes and program management a particular business requires to 'continue' through, or survive, a disaster. A disaster differs from an emergency in that it exceeds the existing ability to cope; from first-responders, the government or the business itself. Continuity, as a field-of-study and active endeavor, has only recently moved out from the top-secret shadows: Continuity of Government (COG) ensures succession of power, while Continuity of Operations (COOP) programs are required and exercised for all Federal Departments at every level. State and local governments are strongly encouraged to participate, as is the business community as a whole; especially those wishing to do business with our government. Now, Business Continuity used to be referred to as Disaster Recovery - but that was short-sighted. Honestly, do you want to recover from, or thrive through, a disaster the likes of which have recently played out in the nightly news? That's what a TRUE Continuity program can do - because the sum of the whole is far more than just computer-storage. Instead, just like Disaster Planning for individuals, it is a WAY of doing business. Continuity has even become main-stream; the Federal Government has developed education programs to train Continuity Professionals. Why?? The vast majority of small businesses DO NOT survive a disaster - for lack of planning! Consider the overall impact to an area devastated TWICE - the second time because the business population loses its anchor and moves away to begin again. Such a double- (even triple) whammy event is playing out before our eyes on the Gulf Coast. Continuity training should be considered essential for every small business - and a professional is needed.
