The Vacuum Shop/Mail & More

I have a Dyson D25 that takes a lot of abuse w 2 dogs. It started running rough so I took it to the vacuum shop. I picked it up w/ a new exhaust, beater brush and cleaning for $55. Since my neighbor also borrows it, I decided to buy him a used one for $40, also great according to him. (no more Dyson lending) If you need parts for an old vacuum or repair go see Marla and her husband leroy. Oh, do you need anything shipped? faxed? A branding iron for your steaks? Candles? board games? texas decor? cookie cutters? they have all kinds of interesting stuff in there. Places like this make Austin (o.k. Round Rock) unique. ...read more

The numbers do not lie

1.  Hello and welcome to AMS Garage doors. We appreciate your patronage and are honored that you are willing to take the time to listen to our educational moment. When was the last time you looked at a classic or vintage car and thought how nice it was and wished you had one? The question you should ask is why the car is still around?I am sure you figured it out after thinking about it….Yep….Maintenance! Periodic maintenance of at least every two to three years of both the operator and the door will prolong both for not one or two years but ten or twenty or more.  That being said let briefly discuss what tactics some companies are useing too get you to buy thier products and spend alot of money doing it.The numbers do not lie.  A 16’x7’ 25gauge door with a free three year warranty installed by AMS Garage Doors cost 564.69 complete. This comes standard with two 15,000 cycle springs designed to last by national standards of opening and closing the garage door four times a day to be Ten years, 13 ball nylon capped lifetime rollers and full body 14 gauge hinges. If therecommended (Not Madatory) service is performed everytwoyears at 89.99 the total investment of the door in ten years will be 1014.64 dollars. Do your homework and shop around. The national average for this same door ranges from 750 to 1200 dollars depending on the company you call. The averagerequired annual service chargeby the same companies to maintain the warranty for the door is 90 to 120. Over a ten year period you are looking at an investment of 2100 to 2400.  Based on these numbers why would you call a company and pay 600 to 700 hundred dollars for a so called “life time spring change” that has a warranty stipulation that you must have the door services every year thereafter for full service price of an average of 120.00 for the average life of ten years? This equals a total investment of 1800 to 1900 dollarsjust for a spring change. That’s almost four complete new garage doors in a ten year span by AMS Garage doors pricing. And at least two complete new doors by the national average.    ...read more

Home owners Beware!

We just watched NBC Daeline the Chris Hansen Files on the 15th of May, 2011. This episode was all about Home Repair Trades like Garage door Repair, Plumbing, Pool Repair, A/C Repair, and I was suprised that so many companies are still utilizing such misleading practices and tactics. It is Highly recommended watching for anybody! Some tips we learned from watching that can help you are: 1. Always walk with the inspector / Service tech during the inspection, and ask questions. A good Inspector /  Tech will have no problem with this and should welcome it. 2: Do a little research on the Company you are considering. The Webb tells all! we looked up the Companies that were on the sting such as Percision Door company under complaints, and we found that although a Franchise type business there we many complaints about them in many other States and Cities for much of the same type of issue. 3: Always get Three or more estimates, As proven in the sting getting a few usually gets varied results but will yeild a better result and less likely to be taken to the cleaners. 4: Ask if estimates are free! Several companies will charge for just showing up! So in closeing the link is provided below, again very good for everybody to watch and educate yourself, and always remember you should treat you home like a car and get things service as recommended they will last alot longer and save you money long term. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032600/vp/43033141#43033141 Have a Great Day! ...read more

Please, Take the time to inspect your Garage Door

This is a Strut, It is supposed to be located at the top of the Door across the top panel as displayed in the picture.  The Strut prevents the panel from folding and collapsing when the door is in the horizontal position And when there is a garage door Opener attached which pushes and pulls the door from the center it will prevent the panel from prematurely failing.    This is a common problem to find the Strut missing on single car Garage Doors, It is common practice for the the Strut not to be installed during construction because there would be no Operator installed.  This unfortunately has been happening for so long that even the companies that do the installations have made it a common practice, it has also been noted that the big box stores selling complete DIY kits for single car garages do not supply it with the kit and is considered an add on. It is always about money with allot of these companies and not the about the customer, as long as you the consumer do not have the education and understanding about your Garage Door or anything in your home for that matter then the service provider has the upper hand and can continue to take advantage of you.  Please take the time to look at you Garage Door this week and test it manually. Ensure that it operates smoothly and is not heavy or hard to open. The door should move freely and easily with just two fingers from each hand to move it, You should also be able to open it half way and let go of it and it should hold its position without closing.  If it closes on its own then it is time for a professional to come out and perform maintenance on the door.  If you are not sure call AMS Garage Doors, Estimates are always free. Our Technicians are trained and will educate you about your garage door and how to inspect, service and test your door so you will be able to determine when it is time for a Technician to come back before the door gets damaged not after.  We carry a wide array of repair parts on our trucks should you need it. ...read more
